Tarihin en ünlü hapishanesinin bulunduğu Alcatraz Adası’nı mesken edinen dizi, hapishanenin 1963’de kapanmasını tüm tutuklu ve gardiyanların aynı anda gizemli bir şekilde kaybolmasına bağlıyor. 50 yıl sonra kaybolanlar hiç yaşlanmamış bir şekilde tek tek geri dönmeye başlıyor.

Dedektif Rebecca Madsen (Sarah Jones), Alcatraz uzmanı ‘nerd’ Dieogo Soto (Jorge Garcia) ve büyük gizem hakkında bilgisi olan, bir nevi Fringe ajanı Emerson Hauser (Sam Neill), hem her hafta ortaya çıkan eski tutukluların pisliklerini temizliyorlar, hem de büyük gizemi biraz daha aydınlatmaya çalışıyorlar. Alcatraz, bir yandan haftanın davasıyla polisiye sevenlere, bir yandan da Lost ya da The 4400 tarzı büyük mitolojileri parça parça aydınlatmayı sevenlere hitap ediyor.

Almodovar korku filmi malzemesinden muhteşem bir melodram yaratmayı başarıyor..

Pedro Almodovar ve Antonio Banderas’ı 21 yıl sonra bir araya getiren İçinde Yaşadığım Deri, artık yakından tanıdığımız ve özlediğimiz Almodovar fetişlerinin çoğunu da perdeye taşıyor. Çoğu, çünkü bir tek tutkulu, eğlenen, eğlendiren büyük kadın karakterler yok filmde.

Almodovar, ilk defa korku türüne bu kadar yakınlaşıyor ve plastik cerrah Robert Ledgard’ın karısının ölümü sonrası yaşadıklarıyla mesleki saplantılarını tuhaf bir şekilde karıştırarak, kendi özgün melodramına dönüştürüyor. Film, Almodovar’ın kendi sinematik saplantılarını da teker teker hikayeye ekliyor: Cinsiyet rollerinin karmaşıklığı, hastalık derecesinde tutku, cinayet, ihanet, büyük yalanlar, büyük itiraflar.

Women’s biopics, here and there

With the Golden Globe-winning portrayals of MargaretThatcher and Marilyn Monroe, respectively by Meryl Streep and MichelleWilliams, here is a look at women’s biopics in Turkish cinema, orlack thereof

When you watch Meryl Streep’s old lady buying a pint of milk from a corner grocery in the opening scene of The Iron Lady, you know you are in for a treat. A treat, perhaps not in the sense of watching a film that will sweep you off your feet, but for the sweet anticipation of a performance that will stick with you.

That old lady is Margaret Thatcher, Britain’s first and only female prime minister, an influential figure in 20th-century history, admired and hated for brazing head on into gender and class barriers and trying unabashedly and ruthlessly to implement a classic free-market ideology.

The film might have failed to please both the admirers of the Iron Lady, for focusing too much on her later years with dementia, and her adversaries, who believed the movie portrayed Mrs. Thatcher with far too much sympathy. But none dared to say anything negative about Streep’s Golden Globe-winning portrayal of the Iron Lady which was done with uncanny precision.

Violence and women subject of new movie

The new movie ‘Kurtuluş Son Durak’ tackles violence against women with female characters refusing to be victimized by male oppression. The same cannot be said of many Turkish TV series, which often glamorize rape and abuse

It is not often you see an all-female cast in Turkish cinema, let alone in Turkish comedy. The fact the recent Kurtuluş Son Durak (Last Stop Kurtuluş) is set around a deeply-rooted issue like violence against women makes the movie an even more important development to Turkey’s pop culture.

Penned by veteran filmmaker Barış Pirhasan and directed by his son Yusuf Pirhasan as his debut feature, the film’s title refers to an address in Istanbul. The residents of the apartment building are the other characters. When Eylem (Belçim Bilgin), a young female psychologist, moves to the apartment soon after being dumped by her fiancé just weeks before their wedding, she at first tries her best to maintain her distance with an eclectic mix of female neighbors.

2011 in Turkish cinema saw political propaganda cede its place to more objective storytelling and directors hone their craft with action/thriller-type films. In 2012, meanwhile, vampires are getting ready to sink their teeth into cinemas

Last year might not have been the most inspirational one in Turkey’s cinematic history, but it saw the biggest number of movies released in 20 years. There were the obligatory award-winning art house movies, and the mainstream comedies aiming for cheap laughs.

But 2011 was also the year political propaganda gave way to a more refined method of storytelling in regard to Turkey’s recent history. 2011 also saw some directors try their craft in action/thrillers to impressive effect. Here’s a look at some examples of the trends in 2011 films, though there were many more that could have made our list.

From Istanbul with love

As the world’s most famous spy Bond prepares to jump into his 23rd adventure on screen, Turkey prepares to host him in Istanbul, Fethiye and the historic Varda Bridge in its opening scenes. This will be the third time Bond visits Istanbul

The coolest, sexiest and most charismatic spy of them all is donning his latest state-of-the-art gadgets and raising his glass of vodka martini – shaken, not stirred – for a celebration of 50 years in the spy business. With a “license to kill” anyone threatening the reign of the British, James Bond is preparing to parachute off to the next exotic locale in the 23rd installment of the longest-running film franchise.

The next exotic locale in the upcoming Bond movie Skyfall, to be released in late 2012, will be none other than Istanbul. The opening scenes will take place in Istanbul’s Sultanahmet Square and Hagia Sophia and a further move will take the crew to the coastal town of Fethiye and the historic Varda Railway Bridge close to the southern city of Adana.

'Gül Hasan' finds its belated audience

Acclaimed Turkish actor Tuncel Kurtiz’s directorial debut of three decades back finally finds an audience thanks to the recent Festival On Wheels. ‘Gül Hasan’ (Hasan the Rose) of 1979 might just be the first example of Turkey’s immigrant cinema.

An internationally acclaimed, award-winning film directed by one of the most prominent names in Turkish cinema is basically a no name here in Turkey. Gül Hasan (Hasan the Rose), the film that marked the stage and screen actor Tuncel Kurtiz’s directorial debut in 1979, had wowed critics during its release in Europe, bringing Kurtiz a best director award in Sweden.

The film had hit some nerves in Turkey, making it the film non grata. It was overlooked during its release, and when the timing coincided with the period of heavy censorship following the 1980 coup, it was eventually forgotten. Now, after three decades, the film is finding an audience in Turkey, mostly thanks to the Festival On Wheels that recently traveled to Ankara, Sinop and İzmir. The film was screened under a special section called Emigres devoted to Kurtiz’s film.

Director Murat Saraçoğlu’s ‘Yangın Var’ (In Flames) tackles the Turkish-Kurdish conflict in a comedy that does not aim for cheap laughs but shows the nonsensical nature of prejudices and ignorance

When the Turkish government made known that the Turkish-Kurdish conflict was no longer a taboo subject and it was open for discussion for a peaceful resolution less than a decade ago, Turkey’s filmmakers were quick to jump on the bandwagon and contribute to the resolution.

History was made two years ago when the biggest cinema event in Turkey, the Golden Orange Film Festival, included in its lineup of films for the National Competition two films in Kurdish, İki Dil Bir Bavul (On the Way To School) and Min Dit: The Children of Diyarbakır.

The government’s undertakings to include greater cultural rights and freedom for Kurds and put an end to separatist notions took two different directions in Turkish cinema. While mainstream cinema was less condemning and more sympathetic toward the past, an independent Turkish cinema by Kurdish filmmakers promised fresh cinema, with distinctive voices, aiming straight at the heart of problems.

‘Ecotopia’ unites villagers against eco-villagers

In ‘Entelköy Efeköy’e Karşı’, residents of an Aegean village come face to face with eco-villagers, tired intellectuals from the city. Yüksel Aksu’s anticipated follow-up to ‘Dondurmam Gaymak’ (Ice Cream I Scream) is fun and provides laughs throughout even if some of the characters are caricatures.

The 1975 novel Ecotopia – or Ecotopia: The Notebooks and Reports of William Weston as the full name goes – by American writer Ernest Callenbach describes one of the very first ecological utopias, where people established their alternative society as a reaction to consumption, food full of chemicals and polluted air.

The Ecotopia in the novel was an inspiration to counterculture and the green movement in 1970s America. And it’s also an inspiration to a bus full of city intellectuals, so-called eco-anarchists, who are hoping to establish their own Ecotopia in a village in Turkey’s Aegean region in director Yüksel Aksu’s second feature, Entelköy Efeköy’e Karşı (Ecotopia).

The award-winning Turkish feature Zenne (Zenne Dancer) will hit screens in mid-January. For the handful of people that have seen advanced screenings of the movie, however, it is already promising to be yet another litmus test of mainstream Turkish attitudes toward a prominent taboo: homosexuality.

The film’s controversial nature arises from its blunt tackling of homosexuality in its relation to traditions, family, state and the military. Co-directed by M. Caner Alper and Mehmet Binay, the film won five Golden Oranges at the recent Golden Orange Film Festival, Turkey’s most prestigious film event. Zenne took home the Best Film Award, the Turkish Cinema Critics Guild’s Best Debut Feature Award, as well as honors for cinematography and best supporting actor and actress.

Searching for elegies in ‘Future Lasts Forever’

Having impressed the audience with his debut feature, director Özcan Alper shows that waiting is worth while with his second feature. ‘Gelecek Uzun Sürer’ (Future Lasts Forever) is a harrowing journey into the heart of the war in southeastern Turkey, not through political propaganda but through powerful human stories.

For those who had watched Sonbahar (Autumn), the inspiring debut feature from director and writer Özcan Alper that was released two years ago, his next feature had become the source of some true anticipation.

In Sonbahar, Alper took the audience to the Black Sea region, where his hometown is, and told the heartbreaking tale of a political prisoner released after a sentence of 10 years. The film was beautifully shot with real characters, some played by local amateurs, grasping the audience at once from the screen.

For some, Alper was already a promising name with two bizarrely-titled documentaries: Tokai City’de Melankoli ve Rapsodi (Melancholy and Rhapsody in Tokai City) and Bir Bilimadamıyla Zaman Enleminde Yolculuk (Travels On Time Continuum with a Scientist), as well as the critically-acclaimed short film Momi.

Behzat Ç. Seni Kalbime Gömdüm (Behzat Ç. I Buried You In My Heart) might just be the most anticipated Turkish movie for quite some time, filling in movie theaters since last Friday. The film is attracting not just the moviegoers, but followers of Turkish TV and some devoted readers.

Behzat Ç. first won the hearts of little more than a handful readers as the protagonist (or more like the antagonist) in novice writer Emrah Serbes’s detective novel, Behzat Ç. Her Temas İz Bırakır (Every Touch Leaves A Trace), published in 2006. The book was promoted as “an Ankara crime story,” and featured a maverick homicide detective, the Behzat Ç. in the title, an unlikely anti-hero who immediately earned his own cult followers among modern Turkish literature.

When a ‘Turkish Passport’ saved thousands of lives

The recent documentary movie ‘Turkish Passport’ is the unlikely story of Turkish diplomats who helped save tens of thousands of lives by issuing passports to Jews during World War II. The new documentary contains extensive research and an impressive production, which hits the right nerves, especially in these trying times.

The Holocaust might have been an accurate indicator of how low humanity could go and of the atrocities humans were capable of. Great tragedies make good stories, and the Holocaust has been an unfaltering source for storytellers for decades.

Jewish and non-Jewish filmmakers alike have turned to World War II for real stories that were more often than not more gruesome than the sickest mind could imagine. First came the stories of war. Then came the human stories of tragedies of families fallen and families forced to break apart, none spared for the sickest game the modern world has seen.

Schindler’s List, Spielberg’s magnum opus to many, was one of the first in exercising hope and praise for unsung heroes of WW II. It was the story of one powerful man who had clung to his humanity and saved over a thousand Jewish lives.

Just when one thinks that every story about the Holocaust has already been told, an unlikely tale of hope, optimism and heroism, or “the only Holocaust story with a happy ending,” enters our lives.

'The Son' looks harrowingly at fathers and sons

Director and writer Atilla Cengiz’s ‘Oğul’ (The Son) tackles war in southeastern Turkey through two fathers’ tragedy. While the story feels half-baked at times, the film reflects the grim atmosphere of war.

As the deliberate attempts to remove taboo status from the guerilla war in the southeast Turkey brought new rights and initiatives for the freedom for the Kurds, Turkish cinema immediately jumped on the bandwagon.

Mainstream cinema, exemplified most famously by Mahsun Kırmızıgül’s Güneşi Gördüm (I Saw the Sun), opted for the safe road of being more sympathetic and less condemning towards the past. A number of Kurdish filmmakers, on the other hand, offered an independent Turkish cinema, more fresh and aiming straight at the heart of the issues. Hüseyin Karabey, Kazım Öz and Özgür Doğan are notable filmmakers coming from a background of documentary and docu-drama.

This week’s Oğul (The Son) falls closer to the second category, offering a uniquely heartbreaking story and a promising new director, despite the shortcomings of the film. Oğul is director and writer Atilla Cengiz’s debut feature. Aficionados of the Turkish TV series will know some of Cengiz’s work as director and assistant director from TV in projects like Hayat Apartmanı (The Apartment of Life) and Aşk Yeniden (Love Again).

Mothers, daughters and real women on Turkish TV

The boom in Turkish TV series might have created a whole new economy, but they continue to rely on the cardboard female characters of the soap opera tradition, victims or vixens.

Turkey’s growing economy and its newfound role as a political powerhouse in near regions might be up for dispute, but it sure is moving headstrong in becoming a global superpower in one area: the popularity of its TV series.

The boom in TV series in Turkey the last couple of years has definitely gone out of control. It is almost impossible to find a TV channel not running a series when you sit down with the remote control, save for football. The productions are becoming bigger by the day with their cast ensemble, flashy costumes and set decorations, as well as safe scripts that border on soap opera-like.

The popularity of nearly 100 TV series has crossed borders to the Middle East, the Balkans, the Caucasus and some other Arab countries. Old and new favorites like Yaprak Dökümü (Fallen Leaves), Bir Istanbul Masalı (An Istanbul Tale), Gümüş (Silver) and Kurtlar Vadisi (Valley of the Wolves) have found their way into primetime TV in such countries like Iraq, Iran, Bulgaria, Greece, Russia and Kazakhstan.

Loneliness and urban decay take center stage at ‘Eylül’

‘Eylül’ brings yet another male protagonist with a mid-life crisis. Cemil Ağacıkoğlu’s award-winner film features lonely characters against the backdrop of the decaying city

Hot on the heels of winning four awards at the recent Golden Boll Film Festival just little more than a week ago, Cemil Ağacıkoğlu’s Eylül hit theaters this week. While "Eylül” means September, there is no direct link to the month nor the Sept. 12 coup of 1980, a favorite topic of Turkish filmmakers.

Eylül is Ağacıkoğlu’s debut feature. Like the internationally renowned filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Ağacıkoğlu’s foray into cinema began after a long career in photography. The photographer within the director is heavily felt throughout the film with long sequences, minimum dialogue and some beautiful cinematography, drawing the viewers into stillness.

The film tells the story of a man’s quest to deal with his wife’s sickness as he falls into the arms of another woman. When Yusuf’s wife, Aslı, is taken to hospital for a serious illness, he meets with Elena, a sex worker from one of the ex-Soviet countries staying in the same hospital room as his wife.

‘Dream and Reality’ celebrates a century of Turkish famale artists

The works of women artists from Turkey who have left their mark on the last century are being celebrated with an exhibition and a lineup of events in the coming months. You can catch ‘Dream and Reality – Modern and Contemporary Women Artists from Turkey’ at the groundbreaking Istanbul Museum of Modern Art until Jan. 22

For an exhibition of influential, yet largely forgotten women artists, you couldn’t pick a much more symbolic name than Hayal ve Hakikat (Dream and Reality).

The title first belonged to an 1891 novel co-written by acclaimed writer and journalist Ahmet Mithat and Fatma Aliye Topuz, a lesser-known figure even though she was one of the first female novelists in Turkey. The first part of the romantic story, Dream, was written by Topuz, while Reality was penned by Mithat, a division of labor not reflected in the credits: The book’s cover listed its writers as Ahmet Mithat and “A Woman.”

Today, Hayal ve Hakikat is the name of a new exhibition at the groundbreaking Istanbul Museum of Modern Art (also known simply as the Istanbul Modern) that celebrates the works of 74 women artists who have left their mark on Turkey over the past century. As Levent Çalıkoğlu, Istanbul Modern’s chief curator and one of the curators of the exhibit, puts it, Dream and Reality – Modern and Contemporary Women Artists from Turkey is “a comprehensive anthology from early beginnings to the present day.”

Turkish cinema had its share of cowboys and aliens as well

While the much anticipated Hollywood movie ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ hits the movie theaters, we remember the cowboys and aliens of Turkish cinema..

Westerns and science fiction are two of Hollywood’s defining genres. Bringing together two action heroes of two generations, Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig, Cowboys & Aliens blends two genres as it lands a spaceship into the Wild West of the 19th century.

It might come as a surprise to those not familiar with the history of Turkish cinema that these two genres had their moments here as well. The 1960s and 1970s witnessed an uncanny period, when movies flew high with everything from westerns and science fiction to adaptation of European comic books and American superheroes.

The movie researchers Giovanni Scognamillo and Metin Demirhan cite the release of the very first Turkish space movie in 1955 and the first western in 1963. When Italian filmmaker Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood made the spaghetti westerns a worldwide phenomenon in the 1960s, not only Hollywood but cinemas of many countries were inspired. Turkey was quick to jump on the bandwagon, which eventually saw at least 15 western movies produced per year in the 1970s.

The lonely male lead returns in 'Saç'

Minimalist writer and director Tayfun Pirselimoğlu’s award-winning ‘Saç’ (Hair) is the latest in a string of Turkish movies featuring a dysfunctional and lonely man at its center. It is the final film in the director’s trilogy exploring death and conscience

The row of shops with wigs and hair extensions in their windows is a familiar sight for many who pass through Tarlabaşı on their way to the heart of Istanbul, Taksim. For many, wigs are synonymous with Tarlabaşı, a run-down neighborhood where migrants, Turkish and non-Turkish, live in what is a hostile atmosphere for many.

Many pass by the shops riding in a taxi, catching a quick glimpse of the wigs and hair extensions, then forget the bizarre scene once the stores are out of sight. Writer and director Tayfun Pirselimoğlu’s award-winning Saç (Hair), however, takes one of these shops and puts it front and center.

Using his now-trademark minimalist style, Pirselimoğlu delves into one of those small shops marked by decay and gloom, as well as the life of the man who seems to be one with the shop. Hamdi (Ayberk Pekcan) is a lonely man who doesn’t seem to tire of silently staring out his window at the prostitute on the street and chain smoking. It’s highly probable that she’s one of his regular customers.

Two weeks to film a short about 'conscience'

For the second year, the Hrant Dink Foundation is asking amateur and professional filmmakers to upload short films on ‘conscience.’ The Hürriyet Daily News talked to Films about Conscience project coordinator Dença Kartun about the project’s message

What is it like to be a lonely woman walking on a roadside, or to be a physically challenged person on a “normal” street? What is it like to be a little boy watching his father’s hand rise to strike a blow?

What is it like to be a young girl who dares to wear a headscarf in high school? To be a woman imprisoned in her own home, trying to survive perpetual violence? To be homosexual or transsexual in a world that imprisons sex and sexuality in sealed boxes?

These are some of the questions raised by Films About Conscience, a short film project being organized by the Hrant Dink Foundation for a second year that asks anyone with a camera to “take a look at the world through our conscience.”

Film festivals celebrate once-censored films in Turkey

This year’s International Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival will hand out awards cancelled three decades ago in two consecutive years. One, as a reaction to Censorship Committee. The other, because of a military coup. In another traveling event, US and Canadian cities get a taste of once-banned filmmaker Yılmaz Güney

The upcoming International Antalya Orange Film Festival, the biggest movie event in Turkey, in September will be a memorable one, and one that will literally rewrite history. The 48th Golden Oranges will have three national competitions for feature films this year. This year’s competition, and two that were never given.

In 1979, the festival was cancelled as a reaction to the Censorship Committee, and the next year, it coincided with the Sept. 12, 1980 military coup. This year, the awards of three decades back, The Latecoming Golden Orange Awards, will be announced on Sept. 12, coinciding with the anniversary of the coup.

When the Censorship Committee decided to ban or cut three films back in 1979, Yavuz Pağda’s Yolcular (Passengers), Yavuz Özkan’s Demiryol and Ömer Kavur’s Yusuf ile Kenan (Yusuf and Kenan), all of the directors and producers competing that year withdrew from the competition.

Turkish celebrities waking up to Twitter’s potential

Long-forgotten singer Hilal Cebeci’s ploy to become popular by sharing intimate pictures of herself through Twitter seems to have worked. Within days, thousands started following her on Twitter

Last month nobody remembered Hilal Cebeci, who hit the pop charts more than a decade ago. Today, she is one of the most popular names once again, thanks to a cleverly-planned social media attack.

Cebeci had little more than a handful of followers on Twitter, the micro-blogging platform, until she recently shared some revealing photos of herself with followers; one showed her in a nightgown, another pictured her wrapped in a towel just before taking a shower, and the final bomb revealed her with much less than a towel. Within days, thousands started following her on Twitter, and today Cebeci has nearly 300,000 followers.

It seems it wasn’t really a naive move to please her limited number of fans, but a more cleverly-devised ploy to increase her popularity – not unlike American model Adrianne Curry’s attempts to rescue herself from obscurity by sharing nude or semi-nude pictures of herself via Twitter. But Cebeci went a step further, showing glimpses of a social media strategy on her part by immediately giving her fans a name, Panpiş – not unlike Lady Gaga, who calls her fans Little Monsters. Now, Cebeci has more followers than Curry.

Will the Oscar ever go to a Turkish film?

The release date for director Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s ‘Bir Zamanlar Anadolu’da’ (Once Upon A Time in Anatolia) has been moved to ensure eligibility for this year’s Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars

Last week, newspapers and movie blogs ran a story on a change in the release date of director and writer Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s latest film Bir Zamanlar Anadolu’da (Once Upon A Time in Anatolia). The winner of the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival will now be released on Sept. 23.

Nearly two months to its new release, why was it such an important piece of news? Because the Oscar race has begun, even here in Turkey. For a film to be eligible for the Best Foreign Language Film in the Academy Awards, it needs to be screened at least one week in movie theaters throughout the year. And the deadline is Sept. 30. Hence the rush, hence the news value.

Turkey has been working toward being one of the contenders of the Best Foreign Language Film race since 1964. To no avail. The closest a Turkish film has come to being nominated was back in 2008 when Üç Maymun (Three Monkeys), again by Ceylan, was among the shortlist of nine films, eventually not making it to the five nominated movies.

What with twittering and video sharing and the paparazzi culture symbolized by massive telephoto lenses, fame and celebrity have turned into something altogether different than what it was two decades ago.

It’s becoming harder each day to believe in the magic and sparkle of being a celebrity. The boundaries between the public personae and the private lives have intertwined. It’s more and more difficult to distinguish what truly makes a person famous – what makes that person admired, or in most cases, frowned upon.

The burdens of being a celebrity are doubled when you are a woman, exemplified recently through two distinctively British women.

Singer-songwriter and all-around tabloid favorite Amy Winehouse’s shocking and untimely death was the pop culture news that rocked the media last week. With only two albums to her credit in the last decade, Winehouse was a one-woman force in British music, single-handedly opening the way for contemporary female soul musicians.

Talent shows dominate TV summer ratings

Filling in the gap caused by the summer hiatus of hit Turkish TV series, talent shows are making a comeback with famous names dominating the jury. While awkward, offhand remarks seem to be the norm in two popular shows while another one without a jury hopes to judge real talent

There was a time on Turkish TV when talent shows were the go-to programs, when they rocked pop culture and drew millions of viewers. This was in the early 2000s, before dozens of TV series replaced talent shows as a ratings generator.

That time has unexpectedly come again as a plethora of talent shows are appearing on TV one after another. It’s summer, which means that hit TV series have all taken their vacations, leaving their slots mostly to mediocre summer series.

As ratings go, talent shows are hitting the roof. As talent goes, not so much. Two hit shows are running on private channels; both are similar in format as well as the make-up of the jury in terms of its celeb-o-meter. And both shows promise to be “schools” for talents as evidenced by their titles: Star Akademi and Artiz Mektebi (Actors’ School).

Director and writer Emre Şahin’s award-winning debut feature, ’40,’ features three strangers whose destinies intertwine around a bag full of money. The fast-paced drama is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise dull movie season

The lives of three people are about to change dramatically, when a bag full of money stirs up the streets of Istanbul in the debut feature of director and writer Emre Şahin, 40. The subject in a nutshell seems to be very similar to the 2005 short film Çanta (Briefcase). That award-winning short, in fact, was directed by Şahin as well.

Şahin’s fascination with Istanbul, his admiration for Quentin Tarantino and his background as a documentary director mix and match in this fast-paced movie that defies any genre.

40 features three strangers who are brought together by the mysterious bag full of money. Metin (Ali Atay), like many others, has come to Istanbul from Anatolia with big dreams, only to end up being a taxi driver and a drug dealer on the side, continuously cursing his luck.

Remembering the ‘Hundredyear- old Sycamore:’ Rıfat Ilgaz

The centennial of late Turkish literary giant Rıfat Ilgaz’s birth was celebrated last week in his hometown of Cide with the annual Rıfat Ilgaz Sarıyazma Culture and Arts Festival. There was a surprise documentary by director Önder Uygun, chronicling Rıfat Ilgaz’s life that was spent with much suffering, courage and writing

The northern town of Cide is one of the few places in Turkey that truly owns up to its legacy. The residents of Cide are proud their town is home to one of the greatest literary names in modern Turkey, Rıfat Ilgaz.

Last Thursday, July 7, was the 18th anniversary of Ilgaz’s death, coinciding with the annual Rıfat Ilgaz Sarıyazma Culture and Arts Festival, held in Cide for the past 16 years. Last weekend witnessed a string of events celebrating the life and works of Ilgaz, a striking being captured in the premiere of the first documentary featuring Ilgaz.

Çınar Publishing House has been honoring Ilgaz’s legacy for years, co-publishing the master’s complete works with İş Bankası Culture Publications, another publishing company responsible for the most comprehensive website on Ilgaz, Rifatilgaz.net, and part of the festival’s organization. Kadir İncesu told Hürriyet Daily News this year was the centennial of Ilgaz’s birth, and “that’s why it was important to have the documentary ready to mark the occasion.”

İncesu recited one of Ilgaz’s most famous poems to summarize the sentiments of the work they have been doing for the centennial: “I split my century into four parts. / Each part, a season, / One left, three gone. / Summer has gone, so has autumn, / Winter, with its snow and blizzard, has gone, / There is only the evergreen spring left!” İncesu and a group of devoted fans, including his son Aydın Ilgaz, are making sure that they are able to create the spring Rıfat Ilgaz was never able to have.

Football film from promising Turkish director scores big

Starring Numan Çakır, Tolga Sarıtaş and Nur Sürer, Sorgu’s debut feature proves to be a promising foray into storytelling as he uses football as a powerful and subtle metaphor for all things in life

When a football team loses 8-0 in director and writer Volga Sorgu’s debut feature Kaledeki Yalnızlık (Loneliness in the Goal), we know the film will not be about the team but the goalkeeper. The eight goals also show the audience the film will be about the protagonist’s despair and his sense of loss, with football being the metaphor for life with all its ups and downs.

In a perfect case of art imitating life, ex-goalkeeper Numan Çakır, who had to quit his two-decade career following a traffic accident, plays Nurettin, a goalkeeper who loses his wife and a bright future in football after a traffic accident. Left with his teenaged son Feyyaz (Tolga Sarıtaş), he continues playing in an amateur team, led by the shady club chair (Erkan Can), hoping to climb up to the bottom of the professional ranks, the third tier.

From the very first minutes, the film touches on diverse subjects such as coping with death, dysfunctional family relations, class differences, the decay of urban life, poverty, fraud and even touches on the lives of third-generation migrant Turks in Germany. Football as a metaphor nearly brushes all of these themes, the major one being the heavy burden of being a goalkeeper in a team game.

The marriage of pop culture and Turkish nationalism continues with the new book ‘Hero Türk’ featuring adventures of all-Turkish child hero. Hürriyet Daily News talks to one of the key names behind all of these projects, journalist Fehmi Demirbağ.

Whether it is the Turkish vigilantes fighting against evil Israelis in today’s Middle East, or “Hunnic Turks” killing giant man-eating dragons in the 4th century, Turkey’s pop culture is devouring Turkish nationalism, repeating a cycle seen half a century ago.

While social media is fuelling and organizing demonstrations for human rights and democracy in recent history, pop culture seems to be taking the safe side with the status quo. The rising voice of the conservative Turkey is hoping to cash in on the sensitivities of young Turks rediscovering their nationalistic streaks.

The latest example of pop culture meeting with Turkish nationalism came in the form of HeroTürk, a book of the adventures of an all-Turkish child hero, which hit the book stores last week, to be followed with a comic book version due to be published next month. Created by journalist Fehmi Demirbağ and novelized by another journalist Hasan Taşkın, the full package includes a children’s book and a comic book, as well as two upcoming films and a cartoon.

Bugün Dünya Şirinler Günü olmasına ve The Smurfs filminin gösterimine bir ay kalmasına karşın, Şirinler’in sosyal medya yolculuğu pek de gösterişli gözükmüyor..

Komunizm çöktü. Ama Şirinler’in komunal hayat modeli sapasağlam işlemeye devam ediyor. Şirinler’in ‘köyden indim New York’a’ macerasını anlatan The Smurfs filmi bir ay sonra sinemalarda. 80’lerde küçük TV ekranından izlediğimiz Şirinler’i 30 yıl sonra 3 boyutlu izleyeceğiz.

Bugün ise Şirinler için önemli bir gün: Dünya Şirinler Günü. Bu özel günde sevdiğimiz Şirin’e hediye almaktan başka ne yapabiliriz bilemiyoruz ama hiç olmazsa küçük mavi yaratıkların sosyal medyada neler yaptığına bir bakalım.

Filmin Facebook sayfası henüz ciddi bir atağa geçmiş durumda değil. 50 bin hayranı olan sayfadan farklı ülkelerin filmle ilgili kendi dillerindeki sayfalarına gidebiliyorsunuz. Buradaki 10 ülkeden birisi de Türkiye, ama henüz sayfanın 25 hayranı var. Filmden bağımsız Türkçe Şirinler Facebook sayfaları da var. Bunlardan birisinin duvarı Şirinler’in politik kimliği ve sembolize ettiği şeylere odaklanıyor. 50 yıldır komunizmi övdüğü iddia edilen Şirinler’in bu sayfada ilginç bir şekilde “emperyalist amerikayı temsil” ettiği savunulmuş.

Turkey’s LGBT communities and their supporters will be flying the rainbow flag high as Istanbul’s 19th Pride Week kicks off Monday. A week of events will be capped by next week’s Pride Parade, during which thousands will march against discrimination. It’s that time of the year for many lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, or LGBT, people to put on their high heels, get their rainbow flags out of the closet and strut their stuff on the street to Lady Gaga’s anthem on acceptance, Born This Way. June is Pride Month in many countries as LGBT communities the world hold events in time with the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots that kick-started the gay rights movement in the United States.

While the colorful, often stereotyped, and mostly marginalized photos of Pride parades around the world are splashed over the pages of newspapers in Turkey, not much is seen or read about the country’s very own Pride Week, which began nearly two decades ago and returns this year on Monday.

The very first Pride Week goes back to 1993 when the organization of the events opened the way for the establishment of lambdaistanbul, the biggest LGBT organization in Turkey.

German cinema coming to an Istanbul screen soon

Istanbul Modern Cinema and the Goethe-Institute Istanbul bring together a selection of recent, award-winning German films for the mini-festival, 'Till Death Do Us Part.' Take a look at five of the unique and unpredictable films from young German directors as they tackle love, death and the meaning of family for 10 days between June 9 and 19

As the movie season draws to a close, occasional film festivals and screenings are popping up to offer unexpected treats to movie enthusiasts. Istanbul Modern Cinema and the Goethe-Institute Istanbul are collaborating for a mini-festival of recent, award-winning German films. The selection of 10 films will be screened under the title Till Death Do Us Part and will run June 9-19. Here is a look at five of the award winners from new directors, with offerings running the gamut from bizarre coming-of-age tales to heartbreaking love stories and chilling mysteries.

The festival will open on June 9 with Sophie Heldman’s debut feature Satte Farben vor Schwarz (Colors in the Dark). The film, which wowed audiences and critics at last year’s San Sebastian International Film Festival, stars Bruno Ganz and Anita Berger as a couple in their 70s who have been together for half a century. The film, following the final days of Fred’s life as the couple try to deal with his terminal illness, takes a uniquely fresh approach to the themes of love and death.

Having devoted her life to battling leprosy and promoting girls’ education in Turkey, the late Türkan Saylan’s final days were a trying affair following a much-publicized police raid on her home. Now, following a short-lived TV series on her life, a feature film about the activist’s unflinching persona as a fighter is set to hit screens across the country

It sounds quite far-fetched to see a girl who was about to fall victim to an honor killing in southeastern Turkey turn up years later as a representative of UNICEF, or someone suffering from leprosy become a nurse. But perhaps it is even more far-fetched to see that one woman was responsible for these and hundreds of similar stories.

That woman is Türkan Saylan, the leading character in a short-lived TV series, and now, a feature film. That woman, however, is not a fictitious character; instead, she is arguably the equivalent of Mother Theresa for modern Turkey.

A university professor and a doctor specializing in leprosy, Saylan battled the disease for decades. She was also the founder of a secularist association devoted to educational grants for girls from the poorer areas of Turkey. Throughout the years, her name became synonymous with the Association for the Support for Contemporary Living Association, or ÇYDD.

Tollbooth clerk on the verge of a nervous breakdown

In ‘Gişe Memuru’ (Toll Booth), director Tolga Karaçelik sends his protagonist, a tollbooth clerk, to a remote highway, making his humdrum existence even more pronounced. Serkan Ercan’s award-winning performance breathes life into a character on the verge of insanity

With thousands of jobs being just variations on the assembly lines of the Industrial Revolution, Kenan’s job might top the list with its painfully boring repetitive nature and lack of breathing space. Kenan, the leading character in Tolga Karaçelik’s debut feature Gişe Memuru (Toll Booth), is a clerk in a tollbooth connecting the endless highways spread throughout Turkey. Day in and day out, his job is to collect the money from the vehicles and raise the guard fence, letting cars and trucks continue along their route.

Serkan Ercan’s Kenan is a character who keeps his frustration under a composed expression and a poised attitude. With a permanent frown upon his face, he never smiles. But what tollbooth worker smiles? As he drops in the tollbooth plaza at the start and end of his shift, he has minimal exchanges with his colleagues.

KÜF Project brings subversive street art to Ankara

There were more smiles than usual in Ankara when the round sidewalk barriers on Cinnah Street, one of the capital’s main roads, turned into yellow “pac-dots” from the Pac-Man video game. Cut outs of Pac-Man and his nemesis Blinky face off over a line of dots that Pac-Man surely would like to gobble right up.

The guerilla installation was the work of Ankara’s collective street art movement, the KÜF Project, which has also turned “No Parking” signs into peace signs and “No Entry” street signs into the jerseys of the Turkish national football team, replicating the 4-4-2 formation of the team in the match against Bosnia in 2009, which led Turkey to be disqualified from the World Cup.

The idea, the group says in its manifesto, is “not to pollute the streets,” but “to color them with dormant energy.”

With a collection of four stories on the comfort and burden of families, and nostalgia for childhood and all things lost – or never gained in the past – Yeşim Erdem’s Filedelfiya Hikayeleri (Philadelphia Stories) is an exploration on small-town life.

Filedelfiya here is not the city that once was the symbol of colonial America, and now one of the largest cities in the U.S. The stories have no relation either to the 1940 movie that made Katharine Hepburn a box office name, The Philadelphia Story. Filedelfiya here is an Aegean town in Turkey that no longer bears that name from antiquity and the Middle Ages.

One of the first ancient cities in the world, Filedelfiya is now a small town, known for its dried raisins and vineyards. And the town was also once home to writer Erdem, who prefers to refer to her hometown as Filedelfiya, not Alaşehir, perhaps to emphasize the transcendent nature of her stories that could come from any place in Anatolia, and who thinks the most distinctive quality of the town was simply the grape vines.

Filedelfiya Hikayeleri features four stories that are seen through the eyes of four people, spanning a period of four decades. The story of a little girl’s foray into the reality of stigmas attached to a certain kind of small-town woman is followed by a young man’s brush with unrequited love in the most unlikely place. The third story features a “bad guy,” who refuses to accept any responsibility in a life that would make him feel good and worthy, while the final and the longest story centers around a woman who returns to her town and to her family for one final visit upon her mother’s death.

Royal wedding: Long live the social media

Nobody can say the British royal family isn't keeping up with the times. With an official website, Facebook and Flickr pages, Twitter account and YouTube channel, the royal family has used social media to its advantage in publicizing the much-hyped wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. There is one mention of the nuptials every 10 seconds

When Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer married in 1981, 750 million people around the world tuned in to watch the fairytale wedding, which eventually did not have a very happy ending. Fast forward 30 years to Friday and Prince William, the son of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, is getting married to Kate Middleton in a much publicized ceremony.

A fairytale princess, a fashion icon and a heart-broken single mother, Diana was the embodiment of her age at the turn of the century. Sadly, her death was also very much in tune with her age when a group of paparazzi on motorbikes hunted her down in Paris.

It is no surprise that her son William is following in her mother’s footsteps, working popular culture to his advantage whenever he can. He is the president of the England Football Association and organized a concert with his brother Prince Harry in 2007 for what would have been Diana’s 46th birthday, gathering such stars at Wembley Stadium like Sir Elton John, Kanye West and Andrea Bocelli.

Two men, a young woman and Ankara

Ankara is not the average go-to city when you want to make a film about the urban middle class, the people of big cities in Turkey. The capital city is much bigger and more populated than most European cities. But for the Istanbul elite, Ankara still is a small town with no hint of the chaos that drives Istanbul and inspires artists of all kinds.

That is why it was not a big surprise when Ankara was featured as the antithesis to Istanbul a couple of months ago in director Ömer Faruk Sorak’s Aşk Tesadüfleri Sever (Love Likes Coincidences). It was also no surprise when one of the characters said, “Have you seen anyone who moved to Istanbul, go back to Ankara?”

Turkish cinema last month was not much unlike history on parade. The film 72. Koğuş (72nd Cell) took us back to the social dynamics of 1940s Turkey, Gölgeler ve Suretler (Shadows and Faces) provided a heartbreaking look into the origins of the Cyprus conflict in the early 1960s while Press was an impressive debut about the recurring murders of journalists in the 1990s.

The recent Kaybedenler Kulübü (The Losers’ Club) takes us to the same time period as Press, but to a place and to a group of people that stand at the opposite end. Press took place in southeastern Turkey, right at the heart of the conflict between the Turkish military and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, and followed a group of journalists whose lives were in danger for revealing human rights violations and pursuing the truth.

Sprinkling magical sand over young audiences and the young at heart alike in her animation The Sandman and the Lost Sand of Dreams, director Sinem Sakaoğlu is turning heads at the continuing Istanbul Film Festival.

Screened under the Kids’ Menu section of the festival, the surreal animation reinterprets the much-loved Sandman, a mythical character in Western folklore who brings nice dreams to children by sprinkling some of his magical sand onto their eyes while they go to sleep at night.

Turkish online 'revolution' demands end to sexist, racist language in media

In the age of social media and cyber-communities, 140-character 'tweets' have kicked off a social movement against sexist, racist or homophobic language in the Turkish media, with thousands signing the Defne Revolution's petition demanding change. Coordinators Binnaz Saktanber and Zeynep Erdim talk to the Daily News about how the 'revolution' began and what they hope it will accomplish

When a columnist known mostly for his arrogance and super-sized ego spat out a disrespectful article on the sad passing of a famous TV personality, he did not encounter the usual nonchalance reserved for his toxic column. “She fell on her sword!” wrote Hıncal Uluç, implying that Defne Joy Foster deserved her untimely death for some assumed flirting or maybe more.

The reaction, almost unanimous, was one of fury. The metaphorical sword turned out to be double-edged when a group of people’s rants against Uluç’s column turned into collective action overnight through the social networking and microblogging website Twitter. A number of users began adding the tag #defnejoy to their Twitter posts; rapidly joined by others, they made her name become a “trending” (popular) topic.

'Press': When journalists become fallen angels

In his debut feature, director and writer Sedat Yılmaz follows a group of journalists in Diyarbakır during the early 1990s, when Turkey topped the list of countries with the greatest number of journalists killed. ‘Press’ is at once very real and heartbreaking

Hrant Dink, Abdi İpekçi, Ahmet Taner Kışlalı and Uğur Mumcu are a few of the names who have given journalism a whole new meaning in Turkey since the late 1970s. They all were killed pursuing truth, human rights and the right to information. It’s hard to imagine Turkey leading any list when it comes to freedom of speech and freedom of the media. But there is actually one list that Turkey tops: the greatest number of journalists killed in any country in 1992.

In fact, the number of journalists killed between 1992 and 1994 is a staggering 30, while the number becomes even more alarming with 17 distributors and sellers included into the list. Director and writer Sedat Yılmaz’s recent drama Press delves into this disgraceful period when the Turkish press received the most fatal hits in its history.

Turkish inmates get new faces in '72nd Cell'

One of the greatest Turkish writers and a modernist pioneer of the Turkish novel, Orhan Kemal, has always been relevant. Kemal’s realist novels on class differences and the poor side of Turkey have left their mark on a period spanning two decades after the early 1950s, now thought of as the golden period in Turkish literature.

Meeting another great literary name, the “romantic revolutionary” Nazım Hikmet, in prison in the early 1940s had a profound effect on Kemal’s literary foray and social politics. He began writing poetry and stories, eventually trying his craft in novels and plays. Kemal was one of the first authors to write about the working class, the alienation of immigrants in big cities, mass urbanization and the changing social structure of Turkey after World War II. He shed a realist light and took a brutal look at poor people living in dignity. Kemal’s stories, novels and plays also lent a voice to working-class women for perhaps the first time in modern Turkish literature.

Ailenin ne olduğu, nasıl işlediği, neye dönüştüğü üzerine yetişkin bir film bulmak gerçekten zor. O kadar hassas bir ayar üzerinde var olan bir sistem ki aile; yazanın da, yönetenin de, izleyenin de kendi takıntılarından uzaklaşıp zaaflarını filme yüklememesi kolay iş değil.

Ya Ordinary People, The Ice Storm ve Revolutionary Road’da izlediğimiz gibi aile sallana sallana, feci bir şekilde çöküyor. Ya da Amerikan dizilerinde, Focker ailesinde gördüğümüz gibi örgütlü bir yanılsamalar sistemi içinde kendi yağında kavrulup, kanser olmak yerine yaşam boyu tansiyon hastası olmayı tercih ediyor.

Artık başlı başına bir türe dönüşen bağımsız sinema ise aile konusunda taşı gediğine oturtuyor, umudunu kaybetmeden ailenin çekirdeğine iniyor ve işleyen/işlemeyen ne varsa gözümüzün önüne koyuyor.

‘Mainstream’ sinemayla başarılı evlilikler yapan bağımsız filmler ise bir adım ileri gidip, yeni yüzyılın işlevsel ailesini tanımlıyorlar. Her sene bir tane çıkıyor, bir Little Miss Sunshine, bir Juno geliyor sinemalara. Bu sene de kısmet Lisa Cholodenko’nun filmi The Kids are All Right’a düşüyor.

Shadows, faces and long-forgotten neighbors

When Turkish cinema began undergoing a revival in the mid-1990s, it was thanks to a handful of names that took a stalling cinema out of its stupor and raised the bar to an international scale.

One of these names was director-writer Derviş Zaim who had wowed critics and audiences both domestically and internationally with his inspiring debut feature, Tabutta Rövaşata (Somersault in a Coffin). The story of the unforgettable antihero Mahsun, the homeless car thief, broke our hearts and went on to win four awards at Turkey’s Golden Orange Film Festival, including one for Best Film, as well as international awards in San Francisco, Thessaloniki and Turin.

Zaim is one of the few names in Turkish cinema who has established himself as a true auteur with six feature films since 1996. He is a master storyteller who doesn’t choose substance over style or style over substance since he blends both in what could be called a type of filmmaking that is uniquely his own. His incredible insight into the intricate dynamics of Turkey’s changing social structure and its history has given us some of the most powerful films on the people of Turkey and its recent history.

Four Kurdish films, one classic movie and three contemporary ones on love, loss, conflict and what it means to be a woman during wartime, are being screened at this year’s !f AFM International Independent Film Festival.

The films make up a special section called The Opening, which debuted at last year’s festival to a popular response.

“We are motivated by a belief in the power of film to tell very human stories. People need to hear each other, and to get to know one another, to make a lasting peace possible,” festival co-director Serra Ciliv said of the selection of films to be screened under the category.

Pop culture in Turkey pushes the nation's buttons once again

Pop culture continues to bring out the nation's sensitivities, or, more likely, insecurities. Controversy is sparked by a TV series showing Sultan Süleyman courting women in the harem rather than conquering the known world, and by a comic book showing a young Atatürk beaten by his superior in the military. Both are accused of tarnishing Turkey's history. But when it comes to the ultra-nationalistic, ultra-violent movie 'Valley of the Wolves: Palestine,' there's no reaction

Turkey is the best country in the world, Turkish history is solely an epic collection of glorious victories and Turks are the greatest people to have ever graced the earth. If these are the messages in your film, TV show or comic book, you are good to go.

But if, by any chance, that same work is seen as tarnishing the image or history of Turkey, you are likely to find an army of sensitive citizens, fanatic ideologues and statesmen (and stateswomen) more than happy to lynch you.

Pop culture tested the limits of national sensitivities in January, with a TV series, a film and a comic book roiling the waters of a nation insecure, intolerant and, at times, paranoid about its identity and how it is perceived by others.

Sinan Çetin's 'Paper' doesn't cut too deep

Filmmaker, movie mogul, commercial powerhouse and larger-than-life public persona Sinan Çetin has taken a break from making ads to return to the silver screen with ‘Kağıt’ (Paper), a not-so-subtle autobiographical metaphor about one man fighting bureaucracy to make a film. ‘Kağıt’ is the latest testament to Çetin’s contradictory stance toward the state

It would be unfair to call Sinan Çetin just a filmmaker, despite the broadness of the term. He has remained a hovering presence over Turkey’s pop culture for two decades whether he makes movies or, as is generally the case, does not. Çetin is a persona who is much larger than the sum of his parts.

It’s a rule of thumb that nearly all popular figures generate their unique brand of devoted fans and followers, along with haters of a similar fervor. With Çetin, the number of fans and followers has diminished and are arrayed against an impressive number of detractors that include other filmmakers, movie critics and viewers.

The director, however, has chosen to show the finger to anyone who deigns to tarnish his work and his persona and has managed to maintain his position in Turkey’s culture scene and his currency among the artistic elite.

Beş sene önce Brokeback Mountain sekiz dalda Oscar'a aday gösterildiğinde eşcinsel sinema ve çok boyutlu eşcinsel karakterler popüler, 'mainstream' sinemaya sonunda giriş yapıyorlar diye sevinmiştik. Piyasadaki hemen hemen tüm ödülleri alıp, En İyi Film Oscarını alamadığında da bu kadar çabuk sevinmemek gerektiğini görmüştük.

Geçen sene de, benzer bir şekilde bir kadın yönetmen 'The Hurt Locker'la Kathryn Bigelow) ve Afro-Amerikalı - bize göre hala zenci - bir senarist (Precious'la Geoffrey Fletcher) ilk defa Oscar aldığında benzer bir değişime, pek de inanmadan, umutlanmıştık.

Bu seneki adaylarla da aynı tas aynı Oscar olduğunu bir kez daha gördük. Ana ödüllerdeki adayların neredeyse hepsi beyaz. En İyi Film adayı iki filmin kadın yönetmeni ise Yönetmen adayları arasında değil (The Kids are All Right ve Winter's Bone).

Yönetmenlerin hepsi, her zamanki gibi, beyaz erkekler. Amerikalı yazarlar, Inception'ın yönetmeni Christoper Nolan neden aday olmadı diye bas bas bağırırken, Lisa Cholodenko ve Debra Granik'in pas geçilmesi kimseye garip gelmiyor.

Kanuni, JFK ve kıçı açık ergenler

İnanılmaz fazla bir alana yayılan muhafazakarlık, tadında paranoya ve korku kültürü olmasa, TV’nin nasıl sınırları zorlayan bir skandal yuvası olduğunu da öğrenemeyeceğiz. Koca koca adamlar Kanuni pilates yapar mıydı, haremde kadınlar sütyen giyer miydi diye engin yorumlarını paylaşmak için o kanaldan bu kanala koştururlarken, yerli dizilerle pek fazla ilgisi olmayanların da aklına kurt düşürüverdiler. Neyin nesi bu dizi diye merak edenlerden birisi olarak, umarım izlediğim yarım bölümle Muhteşem Yüzyıl dizisine birazcık da olsa reyting kazandırmışımdır.

Durum yalnızca bizim muhteşem ülkemizde diye düşünenler biraz rahatlayabilir. Muhafazakarlık ve paranoya konusunda Amerika’nın da bizden pek bir farkı yok. Katie Holmes’un Jackie Kennedy’yi, Greg Kinnear’ın da çapkın kocasını canlandırdığı, bu ay gösterilmesi planlanan The Kennedys dizisi, daha başlamadan yayından kaldırıldı. “Tarihsel hatalarla” dolu olduğu ve”‘bu büyük aileyi rahatsız edici bir bakış açısıyla” anlattığı iddia edilen mini dizi, üç haftadır yayınlanacak kanal bulamıyor. Tabii işin içinde, Amerika’nın en güçlü ailesi olunca seyirciyle buluşması biraz zor gözüküyor.

Altın Küre dedikoduları

Geceye Angelina Jolie’nin ne beter bir oyuncu, The Tourist’in de ne kötü bir film olduğunu söyleyerek başlayan birinin sunduğu ödül töreninde kimlerin kazandığını kim hatırlar? Facebook’la ilgili bir filmin baba ödülleri, lezbiyen annelerle ilgili başka bir filmin de ana ödülleri kaptığını hayal meyal hatırlıyoruz. Bu senenin Altın Küre töreni boyunca kimlerin ödül aldığından daha çok, Ricky Gervais’in bir sonraki hedefinin kim olacağını merak ettik. Hollywood törenlerini aslında niçin izlediğimizi de bir kez daha hatırlamış olduk böylece.

Kırmızı halıda mainstream, bağımsız ve İngiltere: Brangelina, Tom Hanks gibi ağır (ve de ağır olduklarının sonuna kadar bilincinde olan) toplar törenin başlamasına beş-on dakika kala limuzinlerinden inerken, tüm İngilizler çoktan kırmızı halıdan geçmiş, Beverly Hilton’da yerlerine oturmuştu bile.

Winter’s Bone’la Kadın Oyuncu adayı olan Jennifer Lawrence törene ilk gelenlerdendi. Belki de normal insan kilosundaki tek genç kadın olan Lawrence’ı birkaç sene sonra bir deri bir kemik göreceğimizi fark ederek birazcık içimiz burkulmadı değil.

It was only 10 months ago when the dream duo of comedy, Ata Demirer and Demet Akbağ, paired on screen for Eyvah Eyvah, one of the highest-grossing Turkish films of last year. Hot on the heels of the recent DVD release of the film, Demirer and Akbağ reprise their roles as the fish-out-of-water clarinet player and the brazen nightclub singer in the recent sequel, Eyvah Eyvah 2.

Both Demirer and Akbağ have been household names for two decades. After starting her career as a stage actor in the 1980s, Akbağ became a fixture on Turkish TV with her hilarious characters in the TV show Bir Demet Tiyatro in the late 1990s. She later steered her career to the stage and occasional movie roles.

Akbağ may have starred in less than a dozen films in two decades, but her brilliant acting and larger-than-life characters have garnered her various awards. She twice won the prestigious Golden Orange award, one for her role in 1993’s Tersine Dünya (World in Reverse) and another for Vizontele of 2000.

Followers of Turkish movie blogs and movie pages on Facebook might have noticed last week that there was a lot of chatter urging people to go see the feature Teslimiyet (Other Angels). Although you could read about its groundbreaking subject matter, and why we had a social duty to watch it in theaters, we had yet to see a film review among the dozens of blog entries.

Other Angels is the first feature movie to take a candid look at the lives of the transgender community in Istanbul since 1993’s Dönersen Islık Çal (Whistle If You Come Back). The heavy virtual traffic was thanks to those sensitive about the tragic lives of transgender people in Turkey. Here was a chance to make transgender people more visible, a chance to watch them as multidimensional characters as opposed to the simplified and unfair stereotypes they were accustomed to being depicted with. The movie follows the lives of four transgender women living together in the underbelly of Istanbul. They are all sex workers, as is the case unfortunately for most transgender women in Turkey. Save for the novice Sanem (Didem Soylu), the other three are street-smart, true warriors in a world where they are constantly on the lookout.

İzleyebileceğiniz en garip, en deli, en amorf karakterleri sinemaya (ve de televizyona) kazandıran, en karanlık atmosferi büyülü kamerasıyla hiç beklemediğiniz bir aydınlıkla buluşturabilen, dünyanın en garip yönetmenlerinden David Lynch şu sıralar neler yapıyor?

Inland Empire filminin çekim sürecini anlatan belgeseli Lynch: Perdenin Arkasında’yı 2009 yılında !f’te izlemiştik. Kendisi şu sıralar bayağı bir meşgul. Öncelikle marangozluğa takmış durumda. İkiz Tepeler’de Ajan Cooper’ın bayıldığı köknar ağaçlarından kendine kutular, kitaplıklar, hatta sanal şömineler yapıyor. Ahşap sanat eserlerinin fotoğraflarını da Twitter’dan paylaşıyor. Geçenlerde beyaz ve mor desenleri olan bir balta aldığı için ne kadar mutlu olduğunu takipçileriyle paylaştı.

Legendary Turkish duo return for ‘Hunting Season’

Legendary director/actor duo Yavuz Turgul and Şener Şen have reunited after five years for a film that will have moviegoers flocking to theaters. While ‘Av Mevsimi’ (Hunting Season), which follows three cops from three generations investigating the murder of a young woman, is a predictable crime drama, the film is still an impressive character drama

Last week has seen quite a commotion in the movie pages of Turkish dailies as Yavuz Turgul and Şener Şen – the country’s answer to the Martin Scorsese-Robert De Niro duo – return to theaters after a five-year absence.

Director/writer Turgul and his favorite actor, Şen, have united once again for crime drama Av Mevsimi (Hunting Season), reminding audiences how good they are together – the shortcomings of the movie notwithstanding.

Şen reprises the role of an old soul clinging to his past while trying to get acquainted with new times, playing a character reminiscent of his past collaborations with Turgul. He might be a familiar character, but Şen is older, wiser, more sensible, more grounded, and more in tune with the sensibilities of the contemporary era this time around.

Ban lifted on Atatürk film, but where is Atatürk?

A four-decade ban on a Hollywood film about the Turkish Independence War is about to be lifted. There might have been a little misunderstanding though, as Atatürk is only seen for a couple of minutes in the 1970 movie ‘You Can’t Win ‘Em All.’ It is not a historical drama but an action adventure set in the 1920s in Turkey, with Charles Bronson and Tony Curtis in the lead roles

According to renowned Turkish filmmaker Metin Erksan, Hollywood has been interested in making a biopic about Atatürk or a film about Turkey’s Independence War since the 1940s.

When Douglas Fairbanks Jr. visited Turkey in 1951 he is said to have been attracted to playing Atatürk in a film project that never took off. Later, when Sir Laurence Olivier showed interest in the same script he found that no government or civil or private institution would cooperate in the production of the film and the idea was shelved.

Soon after, legendary American director and producer Cecil B. DeMille wanted to adapt Atatürk’s life and the Independence War to the screen. They had no luck, however, even after production partner Adil Özkaptan and actor Yul Brynner met Turkey’s then President Cemal Gürsel.

Grey’s Anatomy küllerinden diriliyor.. Sonunda

Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith’e gıcık kaptığımız, Christina’ya hayran olduğumuz, her hastayı hatırladığımız, her şarkıyla ağladığımız eski günlerine dönüyor. Ve de kendini tekrarlamadan, karakterlerini ve kendini büyüterek dönüyor. Seattle Grace’e geri dönmek için 6 neden...

Ne güzel bir sonbahardı o. İçine düşeceğimiz üç yeni dizi başlamıştı: Lost, Grey’s Anatomy ve Desperate Housewives (ABC için daha iyi bir seneymiş). Lost ve Desperate Housewives’ı en başından izleyip, çevremdeki herkesi heyecanla birbiriyle alakası olmayan bu iki yeni diziye başlatmaya çalıştığımı hatırlıyorum.

Grey’s Anatomy’ye biraz geç girdim. Ama ilk iki sezonu, bol sigara, diet cola ve birayla bir haftada yiyip bitirdim. Hemen Grey’s Anatomy şarkıları indirildi. Meredith ne kadar gıcık tartışmalarında, “O kadın Seattle’dan ayrılsa bir daha hiç bir arkadaşını arayıp sormaz,” deyip daha fazla anti-Meredith taraftarı yanıma çekmeye çalıştım. Christina’ya hayran oldum. Karev’le aşk-nefret ilişkisi yaşadım. Sonra düzenli izlemeye başladım. Izzie’nin Denny’nin alvatvayır’ını kesmesi (doğrusunun ‘LVAD wire’ olduğunu biraz önce Wikipedia’dan öğrendim), Chasing Cars şarkısı eşliğinde balo elbisesiyle hastaneyi terk etmesiyle ‘official’ Grey manyağı oldum.

Sonra her parıldayan dizinin ilk iki sezonundan sonra yaşadığına tanık olduk. Bir iyi, bir kötü olmaya başladı Grey’s Anatomy. Grey’s Anatomy’yi yeniden izlemeye başlamak için 6 neden:

Doktorlar büyüyor: Dört seneden beri ilk defa karakterlerin gelişmelerine, büyümelerine tanık oluyoruz. Mızmızlanan yeni yetme doktorlar yerine sorumluluk alan yetişkinlerle karşı karşıyayız.

Yeni doktorlar oturdu: Dizinin reytinglerini yükseltmek için kalbi delik ya da kıçı açık garip hastalar gibi diziye eklenen yeni doktorlar sonunda eski karakterler arasında yerini bulmaya başladı. Yeni karakterler artık sivrilikleriyle değil, diğer karakterlerle ilişkileriyle dizide varolmaya başladılar.

İlişkiler büyüyor: ‘Yatacaklar mı, yatmayacaklar mı?’ ya da ‘Evlenecekler mi, evlenmeyecekler mi?’ gibi ergen ilişki problemleri yetişkin ilişki problemlerine dönüştü. Meredith ve Derek çocuk yapmaya, Callie ve Arizona uzun mesafe sorunsalının üzerinden gelmeye çalışıyorlar. Christina ve Owen sürekli travmalarla test ediliyorlar. Mark ve Lexie ise eğlenceden ciddiyete sağlam bir şekilde ilerliyorlar.

Izzie’siz bir Seattle Grace: Her ne kadar zamanında Izzie’yi bağrımıza basmış olsak da, dizi içerisinde ve dışarısında iyice zedeleyici bir karaktere dönüşmesi bir çoğunu diziden soğuttu. Dizi için habis bir tümöre dönüşen Izzie’nin Grey’s Anatomy’den çıkması fazlasıyla hayırlı oldu. Yeni ve eski karakterlerin kendilerini göstermelerine ortam yarattı.

Yeni Denny Duquette: Denny’yi diziden çıkarmakla en büyük hatayı yapan dizi ekibi, yeni bir Denny yaratma çabasına emin adımlarla ilerliyor. Teddy, son bölümde hayatını kurtarmak için evlendiği Scott Foley’nin ne kadar seksi olduğunu fark etmemiş gibi gözükse de, biz fark ettik. Bir kez daha ölümcül hasta-doktor kombinasyonu ölümle noktalanırsa Grey’s Anatomy, Lost’tan beter olabilir.

Dr. Jackson Avery: Seattle Grace’de hala seksi ve de henüz çiftleşmemiş bir erkek karakter var. 7. sezonun ikinci yarısında Avery’yi bir kez daha üstsüz görmek istiyoruz.

V - 2. sezon 1. bölüm: Red Rain

Bilim kurgu dizisi demek büyük sorumluluk demek. Ya herkesin konuşmaktan yorulmadığı büyük bir şey yapacaksınız. Ya da mütevazı sayıda ama ölümüne sadık izleyici kitlesinden şaşmayacaksınız. Yeni bir Lost yaratma çabası patladıkça patlıyor. Önce geçen senenin sıkıcı karakterleriyle FlashForward, sonra bu senenin kafası karışık, giderek kötüleşen The Event’i. Tabii bir de Fringe var. Herkese hitap etmek yerine, dikkatli ve akıllı izleyiciyi elinde tutma stratejisiyle giderek güçlenen, her bölümle klasiğe dönüşen bir bilim kurgu dizisi.

Geçen hafta 2. sezonu başlayan V ise ilk bölümünden itibaren hala Fringe olabilme şansını elinde tutuyor. Gerçi fazla zamanı yok. 10 bölümlük bu sezonda kendini tekrarlarsa, Ziyaretçiler’i de televizyon mezarlığına uğurlayacağız.

Red Rain bölümü geçen sezon bıraktığı açık uçları toparlayıp, yeni sezonun yapısını belirlemesi açısından iyi bir bölümdü. Ama bir kez daha, ‘Bu dizi nereye gidiyor?’ sorusuna cevap veremedi. Ziyaretçilerin kötü niyeti, direniş örgütü Fifth Column’un dünyayı kurtarma çabaları hala askıda. ‘Kim ne yapmak istiyor?’, ‘Habire koşuşturan insanların ve uzaylıların planları ne?’ soruları uzadıkça uzuyor. 10 hafta sürecek bir dizi için ciddi zaman kaybı.

Önümüzdeki bölümden itibaren hızla finale ilerliyor duygusunu yaşamamız gerekiyor. Geçen sezon sonlara doğru giderek daha fazla hissettiğimiz annelerin savaşı teması bu sezonu tanımlayan temalardan birisi olacak gibi. Renk vermeyen iki anne, Erica ve Anna’nın aralarındaki elektrik ve hikayeyi ilerletme şekilleri V’nin en güçlü yanlarından. 1983’de Ziyaretçiler’i hayatımıza sokan mini dizi V’nin kraliçesi Diana da, Anna’nın annesi olarak karşımıza çıktı. Denkleme bir anne daha konması harika olabilir.

Bremen’in mızıkacıları rahip, televizyoncu, milis ve dertli uzaylı karakterlerine acil daha sıkı diyaloglar, ortama komedi katmak amacıyla eklenmiş yeni yetme bilim adamı karakterinin de acilen çıkması gerekiyor. “Anna’s hot!” diye espri yapan bir karakter ancak diziyi sabote etmeye yarar.

Her sansür yerinde güzel oluyor. Biz burada kendi ilkel özgürlük/sansür tartışmalarımız içinde debelenelirken, özgürlükler ülkesi Amerika’dan tarihe geçecek bir sansür haberiyle karşılaştık. Ernest Hemingway’in “modern Amerikan edebiyatının tek gerçek kaynağı” olarak tanımladığı bir klasik bu Şubat’ta yeni bir metinle okuyucuların karşısına çıkıyor. Mark Twain’in 1884 yılında yayımlanan romanı Huckleberry Finn’in Maceraları’ndaki tüm ‘nigger’ sözcükleri, siyahları aşağıladığı gerekçesiyle çıkarılıyor. Amerikalıların politik doğruculuk saplantısının ne kadar aşırıya gittiğini gösteren bu girişimin arkasındaki Twain uzmanı Alan Gribben neden böyle bir şey yaptıklarını şöyle açıklıyor: “Irkları ve etnik farklılıkları tanımlama şeklimiz 21. yüzyılda çok farklı. Kızımın okuldaki en yakın arkadaşı siyah bir kızdı ve romandan nefret etmişti.” Aslında köle Jim’i beyaz yapmak daha iyi bir çözüm olabilirdi.

25. Palin ailesinin pop kültüre balıklama dalışı: Hani bir Sarah Palin vardı? Valla, hala var. Realite dizisi ‘Sarah Palin’s Alaska,’ kızı Bristol’un ‘Dancing with the Stars’ yarışmasına katılması ve Palin ailesinin daha bir dolu görünürlük çabası gayet de işe yarıyor gibi.

Oscar takviminin kutsal ayları tıkır tıkır işlemeye başladı bile. Aralık ‘Neden seçilen sunucu(lar) yanlış?’ ayı. Ocak ‘Kimler aday olacak?’, Şubat ‘Oscar yarışında kimlerin hiç şansı yok?’ ayları. Bir de Oscar sonrası var. Mart da, ‘Kimin hakkı yendi?’ ayı.

Şubat sonunda gerçekleşecek 83. Oscar töreninin sunucuları bu hafta açıklandı: James Franco ve Anne Hathaway. Açıklanır açıklanmaz da, tüm dünyadaki sinema ve ödül düşkünleri kolektif olarak şoka girip, ilk tepki olarak ‘Ne alaka şimdi bu ikisi?’ dedik.

Nikah masasında terk edilen gelinler (Grey’s Anatomy), tüm ülkenin gözü önünde yaşanan kaçamaklar (The Good Wife), her sene sayısı çoğalan evlilik dışı çocuklarla (Brothers & Sisters) Amerikan televizyonunun uzun süredir evlilik kurumuna güvenini kaybettiği ortada. Bu akşam ilk bölümünü izleyeceğimiz Undercovers, evliliğe biraz heyecan getirmek için 1980’lerde test edilip onaylanan bir formülü ekranlara taşıyor. Ev işleri ve yatak sohbetleri arasında birazcık da dedektiflik yaparak hayatlarını renklendiren, Tehlike Çemberi’nin (Hart To Hart) Hart çiftini 40 yıl sonra günümüze uyarlıyor. Undercovers’ın karı-kocası Steven ve Samantha Bloom, evlere yemek servisi yaptıkları işlerinden ara sıra uzaklaşıp, sofistike casuslara dönüşüyorlar.

J.J. Abrams eskiye dönüyor

Lost’un sona ermesinden sonra yazar, yönetmen ve yaratıcı ekibin neler yaptığı, hangi diziler üzerinde çalıştığı bir süredir internette dolaşıyor. Issız bir adaya düşen uçak kazazedelerinin hikâyesini beyinlerimizi sulandıran karmakarışık bir deneyime dönüştüren asıl isim ise J.J. Abrams. Lost’un tohumlarını atıp aradan çekildikten sonra, hızını alamayıp paranormal fantezilerini bir başka diziye, Fringe’e bocalayan Abrams yeni dizisiyle eski romantik casusluk günlerine dönüyor.

Casusluk, hayatı renklendirir

Undercovers’tan yeni bir Lost ya da Fringe bekleyenlerin acilen beklentilerini yeniden programlayıp, Abrams’ın Alias günlerini hatırlamaları isabet olabilir. Dizinin karı-koca kahramanları Bloom çifti, ‘catering’ işlerinde mutlu mesut hayatlarına devam ederken kapılarına bir adam geliyor. Carlton Shaw isimli bu adam, beş yıl önce CIA’den ayrılan iki eski casus Steven ve Samantha Bloom’dan kaybolan eski meslektaşlarını bulabilmeleri için son bir kez işe dönmelerini istiyor.

Bloom çifti de, ‘yalnızca bir kere’ diyerek casusluk işine yeniden bulaşıyorlar. Beş yıldır casusluktan ellerini eteklerini çekmelerine karşın en son teknolojilere hakim, vücutları hâlâ formunda ikili içlerini kıpır kıpır eden eski dünyalarına böylece dönüş yapıyorlar. Büyük devlet meselelerinin içine balıklama atlayan çift, daha önce konuşmama kararı aldıkları geçmişleriyle de yüzleşmek durumunda kalıyorlar.

Aslında bu hikâye çok tanıdık

Undercovers türünün benzer örneklerine yeni bir şey eklemeden, tamamen bildik formülleri kullanmayı tercih ediyor. Gugu Mbatha-Raw ve Boris Kodjoe’nin canlandırdıkları çift hem yetenekli hem güzel hem de her türlü casusluk klişelerinde bir numara olduklarını gösteriyorlar. Mükemmel evleri, havalı arabaları, şık giysileriyle, ‘catering’ işinde iyi para olduğunu da görüyoruz böylece. Bloom’lardan yardım isteyen derin devlet adamı Shaw, giderek derinleşen, gizli bir gündemi olan klasik şaibeli karakteri oynuyor. Steven’a geçmiş günlerinden hayran, bilgisayar dâhisi Bill Hoyt da, dizinin komik yan karakteri rolünde karşımıza çıkıyor.

Bloom çiftinin birkaç eksiği var

Her hafta dizi ilerledikçe, Bloom’ların neden yeniden casus işine çağrıldıklarını anlatan daha büyük bir öykü olduğu ortaya çıkıyor. Anlatım, bölümün ilerleyişi, komedi ve maceranın karışımıyla Undercovers, Chuck’ı hatırlatıyor. Maalesef, Chuck’ın karakterleri arasındaki sıcak ve sevimli ilişkiler, en önemlisi de esas karakterin karizması burada ortalarda gözükmüyor. İki yeni oyuncunun canlandırdığı Bloom çifti, tüm çekiciliklerine karşın diziyi sürükleyecek elektriği yakalayamıyorlar. Her an gelecek diye beklediğimiz kıvılcımın, dizi ilerledikçe pek de yakında olmadığını görüyoruz.

Undercovers tanıdık oyuncularla rayına oturabilecekken, Mbatha-Raw ve Kodjoe omuzlarına binen diziyi götürme göreviyle her bölümde daha fazla eziliyorlar. Ne zaman ciddi, ne zaman komik olacaklarına, hangi arada flört edip, hangi arada soğukkanlı davranmaları gerektiğine bir türlü karar veremiyor. Başlarda potansiyel vaat eden Undercovers izleyiciyi sıkmadan ilerlese de, televizyon mezarlığına adım adım ilerliyor.

Fairy tales come easy for director Irmak

Director Çağan Irmak shows once again that he might just be the most original filmmaker of his generation. His latest feature, ‘Prensesin Uykusu’ (The Sleeping Princess), centers on Irmak’s trademark lonely man and a little girl in coma. Reality and imagination run rampant to heart-warming effect

Çağan Irmak might just be the epitome of the ideal filmmaker. The prolific Turkish director knows how to tell a good story. And he loves telling those stories. He takes risks, he is highly imaginative and he never repeats himself. Each of his features is different than the previous. This might hinder his chances of being an auteur, but it definitely makes him one of the best Turkish filmmakers of our age.

You will most likely hear his latest feature, Prensesin Uykusu (The Sleeping Princess) labeled as “a modern fairy tale.” Any new film, book or work of art with some edge can very well be called a modern fairy tale. What Irmak skillfully manages to do is let his imagination loose while being simultaneously realistic and over-the-top along the way.

Somewhere along his career, Irmak has become the voice of the fallen modern man. Prensesin Uykusu introduces yet another lonely man as the film’s protagonist. One of the most optimistic, most hopeful characters to come to screen, Çağlar Çorumlu’s Aziz lights up the screen from the very first scenes. Riding on a bus every day to go from his apartment to the library he’s working in, he sometimes makes the people around him apprehensive with the big smile plastered over his face.

The smile is “always there,” as he informs one of the characters. He brightens his otherwise dull life with an imagination running rampant. He puts harlequin masks over the bored commuters in the bus, he greets a colorful phoenix high up in a tree, he shoos the giant underwater creature from Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and when he is scared, he summons a Cyclops from the underbellies of his imagination.

Giving hope in most unlikely places

Aziz has two people in his life. One of them is his childhood friend (in fact, his friend from the orphanage) and flatmate Neşet (Alican Yücesoy), the womanizer with a heart of gold. And the other is the cleaning lady in the library, Hacer (Ayşe Nil Şamlıoğlu), looking after him with motherly affection.

Things take a turn in the routine life of Aziz as the little princess in the title of the movie moves into his building. With her mother. Aziz tries befriending the new neighbors, the 9-year-old Gizem (Sevval Başpınar) and her single mother Seçil (Sevinç Erbulak). Seçil is rightfully apprehensive of this overly friendly man as she is trying to escape from her past, with a very wrong selection of men.

Soon after they move in, Gizem falls into a coma after an accident, hence becoming the Sleeping Princess. Aziz and Seçil form an unlikely bond in the corridors of the hospital in a shared concern over the life of the little girl.

The film’s narrative is mostly the real and imaginary world of Aziz, with state-of-the-art animation working as flashbacks to his past. While not refraining from showing despair in its most naked form, Irmak weaves a magical story brimming with hope. He has that talent: giving hope in the most unlikely places, shining a light in the pitch black. Maybe Prensesin Uykusu is a fairy tale after all.

Harry Potter and the growing pains

The first part of Harry Potter’s epic finale arrives in movie theaters. ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1’ is both a somber acknowledgment of the coming-of-age of our hero and his friends, and the anxious anticipation of the showdown between Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort next year

It doesn’t seem that long ago when Professor Dumbledore had warned Harry Potter and his devoted audience of the impending doom: “Dark and difficult times lie ahead of us.” Dark and difficult times are finally here. And the end is near, but not quite here.

The adaptation of the final book in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, hit the theaters around the globe last week. As to why the end is not here, the conspicuous Part 1 attached to the movie title might answer it. In a probable attempt to milk the final drops of the cash cow that is the Harry Potter franchise, Warner Bros. decided to split the epic finale into two movies.

For fans, this works just fine. Warner Bros. might just have given us 14 movies from the very beginning. For those who have been following Harry Potter not from the best-selling books by J.K. Rowling but from the movies, it seems splitting the final book into movies works just as well. Now in his third Harry Potter film, director David Yates manages to treat the first half of the book as a complete and coherent story of its own.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 does not look like a film sliced into two. Yates captures the calm before the final storm that will mark the end of the Harry Potter stories. The penultimate film sets the tone of the epic finale, just like the first half of the book was a preparation to the action-packed final chapters.

The film will only be a disappointment to those who belatedly decide to jump on the Harry Potter bandwagon from the seventh film. We had seen in the previous film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, that Yates had made a brave decision to make newcomers feel unwelcome unlike the four directors before him. He continues his conviction here, hence making the film more about its characters than magical extravaganza.

Lost in the woods

It has become a tradition, even a cliché, to label the latest Harry Potter movie darker and more adult than the previous one. But clichés have a way of sneaking into film reviews. The film begins in an Orwellian world where Dark Lord Voldemort’s name is pronounced openly to the sheer horror of witches, wizards and even Muggles. Voldemort’s dark mark in the sky and the Death Eaters capture the essence of this apocalyptic world.

The realization that things have changed so dramatically comes perhaps best with seeing our hero Harry Potter and his friends, Hermione and Ron, not in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for the first time. There are no innocent school antics, no experienced wizards and witches to protect them from deadly spells, and sadly no Dumbledore to guide Harry Potter from the underbellies of darkness.

Seeing Harry Potter and co. lost and paranoid in the middle of the desolate English countryside as opposed to strutting behind the safe walls of Hogwarts hits harder when we see the three children as young adults. As Harry, Hermione and Ron bicker and fight about the Horcruxes they have to find and destroy, we can’t help feel the empty nest syndrome looming just around the corner.

It is at best sad to see these children we have watched over a decade become the equivalent of young GAP models. There is love, teenage angst, rebellion and hormones, something hard to watch at times akin to seeing your child become a teenager. The three know they have to destroy the Horcruxes, the objects containing fragments of Voldemort’s soul, to send the Dark Lord into oblivion. But they don’t know how. They no longer have the guiding magic of the elders. And there are few things sadder than seeing young wizards trying to find their way on their own.

Film karakterlerinin isimlerinden öğrendiğim bir şeyler var

İsimlerimizin kızılderililerinkiler gibi derin anlamları olması hoş bir şey. Mesela Emrah, “saz çalıp oynayan” demekmiş. Pelin de, dünyanın en zehir içkisi absentin yapıldığı otun adı. Hazırladığı dehşet kokteyllerle erkeği göbek attırmaya çalışan kadının hikayesini anlatan bir kısa film çeksek, isimler hazır yani.

Türk sinemasında da çoğu zaman isimler aynen böyle seçiliyor. Şu anda gösterimdeki iki popüler film New York’ta 5 Minare ve Prensesin Uykusu’ndaki karakterlerin isimleri durumu gayet güzel özetliyor.

Mahsun Kırmızıgül ve Mustafa Sandal, Amerikan ekolünden iki zıt karakterdeki polisi oynuyorlar. Birisi Doğulu Kürt, diğeri şehirli aydın. İsimler: Fırat Baran ve Acar Aydın. Fırat Baran’la hele bir taşla iki kuş vuruluyor, hem etnik hem coğrafik kökeni şıp diye anlıyoruz.

Michelle Williams neden Marilyn olamaz?

Hollywood, dönem dönem kapağını hafifçe aralayıp, sonra yeniden kapadığı Marilyn kutusunu bu sefer sonuna kadar açmış gibi. İki Marilyn Monroe filmi şu anda yapım aşamasında. Amerikalı yazar Joyce Carol Oates’un biyografi soslu romanı Blonde’ın uyarlaması ve Marilyn’in 1957 yılında, The Prince and the Showgirl filminin çekimleri için gittiği İngiltere’deki bir haftasını anlatan My Week with Marilyn.

İlk filmde Marilyn’i Naomi Watts, ikincisinde de Brokeback Mountain’daki rolüyle Oscar’a aday gösterilen Michelle Williams canlandırıyor. Watts’ın iyi bir Marilyn olacağını görmek için herhangi bir filmini ya da yalnızca Mulholland Drive’ı izlemek yeter gibi geliyor.

Peki ya Michelle Williams? Kısaca, ölümcül derecede yanlış bir seçim. İyi bir oyuncu olan Williams, oynadığı her karakteri bir şekilde yaralı, hüzünlü birine dönüştürmeyi başarıyor. Kendisini ilk gördüğümüz Dawson’s Creek’de bile umursamaz ergen tiplemesini bir türlü anlaşılamayan yaralı kadına dönüştürmüş, sonunda da kanser olmuştu.

Marilyn’i canlandıracak oyuncu büyük bir paketle başa çıkmak zorunda. Bu paketin içinde taze ve saf güzel, usta komedyen, seks bombası ve intihar eğilimli bir kadın var. Williams’ın bir türlü aşamadığı tutukluğunu bu sefer atabildiğini varsaysak da, hayvansı bir seksapeli hangi teknikle oynayacak merak ediyoruz. Ne kadar başarılı olabileceğini görmek için yakın zamanda verdiği Marilyn pozuna bakmak yeterli. Harika bir makyajla Marilyn’e benzetilmiş, boş boş kameraya bakan bir Michelle Williams.

Five minarets, a few too many messages

Once a king of arabesque, Mahsun Kırmızıgül is now continuing to flaunt his new persona as an accomplished filmmaker with his third feature. ‘New York’ta 5 Minare’ (Five Minarets in New York), written, directed and starring Kırmızıgül, tackles paranoia toward Islam with impressive cinematography and action scenes, but misses with a lack of subtlety

It’s déjà vu all over for Turkish moviegoers, critics and a substantial portion of the Turkish media. Once one of the most popular names of exploitative arabesque music, Mahsun Kırmızıgül is continuing his new quest to position himself as a revered filmmaker despite being given the cold shoulder by the Turkish cinema establishment.

Kırmızıgül’s third feature New York’ta 5 Minare (Five Minarets in New York), which was controversial both with its subject matter and the debate it generated in the media, hit the ground running with impressive opening box office numbers.

The film, written, directed and starring Kırmızıgül, hopes to hit the right target with its subject of global Islamic paranoia and abundant messages of peace, understanding and tolerance.

The film’s title is a play on a popular folk song, Five Minarets in Bitlis, Bitlis being a small city in eastern Turkey, and one of the cities featured in the film alongside New York City. Kırmızıgül takes center stage with another veteran pop singer, albeit of a different style, Mustafa Sandal. The two play two Turkish cops that are part of an anti-terrorist unit from the opposite ends of the social spectrum. Kırmızıgül’s character’s name, Fırat Baran, clearly gives away his ethnicity. Fırat is the river Euphrates, which passes through southeast Turkey while Baran is a Kurdish name. Sandal plays Acar Aydın (the last name means “enlightened” or “intellectual”) and sports a goatee, speaks very good English and raises his brow at Fırat’s unorthodox style of interrogation.

The two fly to New York to bring back the supposed leader of a Muslim terrorist organization, code name Deccal (Dajjal, or the Islamic version of the Antichrist). Experienced actor Haluk Bilginer plays Hadji Gümüş, a respected Muslim scholar and a family man. As Hadji flees prior to flying to Istanbul, Turkish cops and FBI agents, led by the Islamophobic officer Becker, follow their own ways to bring about justice.

Robert Patrick (T-1000 in the second Terminator movie) plays Agent Becker, Gina Gershon (Showgirls) plays Hadji’s devoted Christian wife, and Danny Glover takes on the role of the American Muslim leader, Marcus. The action scenes, cinematography, editing, and sound are on a par with Hollywood productions.

What the film basically lacks, however, is subtlety. The string of messages hit the audience from every direction. The scenes where Hadji preaches on the messages of peace in Islam, the way his blissful marriage with a Christian woman is brought up, the FBI agent blaming every Muslim in the world for terrorism, and Acar’s speech on the integrity of the Turkish police is stretched to the point that it becomes a lesson for high school students.

Kırmızıgül still looked down upon

Kırmızıgül and Co. have not been on very good terms with Turkish film critics as his last two films were not considered by the Cinema Writers Association, or SİYAD, in their annual awards. His debut feature from four years ago, Beyaz Melek (The White Angel), showed a flair for a good story and was unexpected given Kırmızıgül’s background as a singer. The film had its shortcomings, but pleased a wide range of moviegoers and even some critics.

Last year’s box office success, Güneşi Gördüm (I Saw the Sun), showed that Kırmızıgül had further mastered his craft. Taking a brutal look at the Kurdish problem in Turkey, the film was one of the best of the year despite too many sub-plots and the familiar lack of subtlety when it came to giving messages.

The passive-aggressive and indifferent attitude of the film critics must have annoyed Kırmızıgül as he decided to cancel the press screenings scheduled in Istanbul and Ankara on Nov. 1 in what seemed like yet another message.

The silent war between the filmmaker and the critics was made even clearer when one of the country’s biggest movie magazines, Sinema, barely lent a page to the movie and Kırmızıgül. Sinema magazine is known for promoting Turkish cinema, allocating most of its pages to interviews with Turkish filmmakers and giving detailed information on Turkish films.

It seems Kırmızıgül is still the singer looked down upon by those with a supposedly more “refined taste.” He might need to continue wearing the label for a while yet.

Kendini ‘köpek psikoloğu’ olarak tanımlayan Cesar Millan, realite dizisi ‘Dog Whisperer’da arızalı köpekleri rehabilite ediyor, sahiplerine de sıkı bir eğitim veriyor

Köpek olduğunu bir türlü kabul etmeyen Snoopy ‘Köpeklere fısıldayan adam’ Cesar Millan’la tanışmış olsaydı, dünyanın en sıkıcı çizgi karakterlerinden birine dönüşebilirdi. Realite dizisi Dog Whisperer’a konuk olan sorunlu köpekleri rehabilite etmek için Amerika’yı köşe bucak dolaşan Millan’a göre en büyük sorun köpeklerin köpekliklerinden uzaklaştırılması.

Amerika’da yedi sezondur devam eden Dog Whisperer, bir süredir burada da kulaktan kulağa kendi sadık izleyici sayısını çoğaltarak, köpek sahiplerine sohbet konusu yaratmış durumda. Belki de köpek sahiplerinden çok, komşularının ilgi göstermesi gereken bir dizi Dog Whisperer. Köpeklerinin sorununun çözülmesi için son çare Millan’a baş vuran kişilerin bir çoğu komşularıyla kavgalı, hatta bir kısmı mahkemelik.

Durmadan havlayan, bisikletlilere saldıran, bahçelerine adım atanların ayaklarını ısıran köpekler, Millan’ın müşterilerinden bazıları. “Tanrı’nın ve benim ortak hedefimiz, dünyayı köpeklerin yardımıyla dönüştürmek,” gibi büyük bir iddiası olan Millan’ın kibrini sonuna kadar hak ettiğini söyleyebiliriz. Veteriner ve köpek eğitmenlerinin çare bulamayıp uyutulmasına karar verdikleri nevrotik köpeklerin, Millan’ın sihirli iletişimiyle birkaç dakikada nasıl pamuğa döndüğünü izlemek gerekiyor.

Sürünün lideri olmak

Cesar Millan kendini bir köpek eğitmeninden çok köpek psikoloğu olarak görüyor. Onun için önemli olan köpek ve sahibi arasındaki ilişki. “Köpekleri rehabilite ediyor, sahiplerini de eğitiyorum,” diyor ve hayvanın arızasının hemen her zaman sahibinin yanlış davranışından ortaya çıktığını ve kronikleştiğini gösteriyor.

Köpeklere insan gibi davranılması, Millan’a göre sahiplerin yaptığı en büyük hata. Köpeklerin özünde kurt olduğunu ve beraber yaşadıkları insanları sürüleri olarak algıladıklarını sürekli hatırlatıyor. Sahibin yapması gereken ise, bir oda arkadaşı değil sürü lideri olduğunu köpeğine göstermek. Sakin, kendine güvenen ve taviz vermeyen bir lider olduğunuz sürece sorun yok. Millan’ın sorunlu köpeklerle ilk yaptığı da bu. Evine konuk olduğu köpeklerle birkaç dakikalığına yürüyüşe çıkan Millan, öncelikle baş başa kaldığı hayvana lider olduğunu hissetiriyor. Sonrasında da, sorunlu davranışı kendi istediği şekilde ortadan kaldırıyor.

Cesar Millan’ın şaşmaz terapileriyle ilgilenenler arasında, Will Smith ve karısı Jada Pinkett Smith ile Oprah gibi ünlü isimler de bulunuyor. Sayısız köpek sahibinin hayır duasını alan Millan genelde tek başına çalışıyor. Yardıma gereksinimi olduğu zaman da, karısını ve iki oğlunu çağırıyor. Her türlü tekerlekten nefret eden bir köpeği yürüyüşe çıkardığında yanlarından geçen kaykaylı ve bisikletli konu mankenleri çocukları oluyor. Karısı ise kızgın komşudan, köpek kuaförüne her türlü role soyunuyor. Millan’ın ergen oğullarının babalarına saygı duymaları ise South Park’ın bir bölümünde Eric Cartman’ı rehabilite etmesinden sonra oluyor. İki Emmy adaylığı olan Dog Whisperer dizisinin yıldızı fire vermeyen başarılarını tek bir cümleyle özetliyor: “Bir köpekle beraberken her zaman köpek gibi düşünmeniz gerekiyor.”

Kocasını evden kovar, evinin avuç içi kadar bahçesine havuz inşa ettirmeye karar verir, öğrencilerinden birini kurtarmayı misyon edinir. Hastalığını şimdilik kendine saklamaya karar veren Cathy, önündeki kısa zamanını içinden geldiği gibi yaşamaya kararlı.

Suç ortağı kim? Yaşlı ve aksi komşusu Marlene. Hasta olduğunu öğrenene kadar karşı komşusunun kim olduğunun bile farkında olmayan Cathy, algıları açılınca Marlene’in varlığını da fark eder. Doktoru dışında kanser olduğunu bilen tek kişi, bu yeni arkadaşı (bir de Marlene’in köpeği Thomas).

Ne demiş? “Öfke bana harika geliyor.”

Ne kadar aykırı? Nancy ve Jackie kadar sınırları zorlamasa da, Cathy’yi günlük hayat anarşisti olarak kabul etmek gerekiyor. Daha önce alışık olmadığı bir şekilde içinden geldiği gibi davranmaya başlayan Cathy, bahçesinde çıplak güneşleniyor, giysileriyle havuza atlıyor, tüm emeklilik ikramiyesini bankadan çekip kendine lüks araba alıyor. Bunların hepsini, aklına düşmesinden birkaç dakika sonra gerçekleştiriyor.

Köyünü özlemekten hiç bir zaman vaz geçmeyen ‘Altın Kız’ Rose, dilini sivriltiyor, taşraya taşınıyor ve kendine üç yeni şehirli arkadaş seçerek, mutfak masasındaki sohbetlerini 20 yıl sonra yeniden yaratıyor. Altın Kızlar’da Rose’u canlandıran Betty White, dört kadın arkadaşı ekranlara taşıyan en son dizi Hot in Cleveland’da benzer bir dünyaya geri dönüyor.

Los Angeles’da yaşayan üç arkadaşın, kadın kadına yapacakları Paris tatili uçaklarının bozulmasıyla yarım kalıyor. Kadınlar kendilerini varlığını çoktan unuttukları taşrada, Cleveland’da buluyorlar. Yeni boşanmış yazar Melanie (Valerie Bertinelli), ‘Hollywood’un kaş kraliçesi’ güzellik uzmanı Joy (‘Frasier’in Daphne’si Jane Leeves) ve Hollywood’da artık müzelik kabul edilen eski pembe dizi oyuncusu Tori (Wendie Malick) bu unuttukları dünyanın güzelliklerini bir kez daha hatırlıyorlar: yağlı yemekler ve yaşıtlarıyla flört etmeye çekinmeyen erkeksi erkekler.

Carrie’nin karmaşık şehir hayatı ve daha da karmaşık çiftleşme oyunlarıyla başa çıkabilmek için kurduğu alternatif aile modelini Blanche, evine ve hayatına aldığı üç kadınla 25 yıl önce ekranlara getirmişti. ‘Altın Kızlar’dan ‘Sex and the City’ye TV’de kadın arkadaşlığı

Time dergisi 1998 yılında feminizmin can çekiştiğini savunuyor ve o sayısının kapağına konu mankeni olarak da Ally McBeal’i taşıyor. İki yıl sonra, bir kez daha feminizmin gidişatını kapak konusu yapan Time, bir kez daha bir TV dizisinden ilham alıyor. “Kimin kocaya ihtiyacı var?” başlığının altına pop kültürü yeni fethetmeye başlayan dört kadının fotoğrafını uygun görüyor: Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte ve Miranda.

Yönünü şaşırmış beyazperde maceralarıyla eski günlerini aratan Sex and the City kadınları, 1990’ların sonunda bir yandan fazlasıyla tanıdık, diğer yandan hiç alışılmadık bir pop kültür olayı olarak hayatımıza düşüyorlar.

Sex and the City’ye ilk başlarda uçlarda tepki vermemek mümkün değil. TV izleyicileri, TV eleştirmenleri, kadınlar, erkekler, feministler, herkes ikiye bölünüyor. Kimisi mesajı doğru bulmuyor, kimisi mesaj olmadığını savunuyor, mesajı takmayanlar da kadınların penis boyu ve erken boşalma sohbetlerini hafif bir gülümsemeyle izliyor.

Cinsel özgürlük, kadın cinselliği, kocaya ne kadar gerek var tartışmalarının ateşi sönünce dizinin belkemiğinin seksten ve seks sohbetinden çok daha öte bir şey olduğu da netleşiyor. Bizi çeken şeyin, dizinin itici gücünün kadın arkadaşlığı ve Carrie’nin de dediği gibi “kahve, yumurta ve sıkı bir dedikodudan oluşan cumartesi sabahı ritüeli,” yani arkadaş sohbeti olduğunu görüyoruz. Carrie ve arkadaşlarının erkek egemen düzene karşı silahları, ilk sandığımız gibi, erkeklere gülmek değil. Kadınlarla beraber gülmek.

Samantha’dan önce Blanche vardı

Libidosuyla her daim barışık Blanche, saflığından taviz vermeyen Rose, emekli öğretmen Dorothy ve Dorothy’nin sivri dilli annesi Sophia, kadın arkadaşlardan oluşan bu yeni ailenin belki de televizyondaki ilk temsilcileriydi.

Altın Kızlar ana karakterlerine hala aktif aşk ve seks hayatları verip, onları yaşadıkları çağa uydurarak, orta yaşı geride bırakmış kadın tiplemesine de taze hayat veriyordu. Sex and the City kadınlarına benzer bir şekilde, modern hayatın çiftleşme oyunlarından bunalan bu kadınların ve bu dizinin neden bizi sarıp sarmaladığı ise jenerik şarkısında her hafta bir kez daha hatırlatılıyordu: ‘Thank you for being a friend.’

TV’de kadın arkadaşlığının çeşitlemeleri daha sonra Lipstick Jungle, Cashmere Mafia ya da Women’s Murder Club gibi dizilerde karşımıza çıksa da, devaraldığı tacın hakkın verebilen Wisteria Lane’in komşu kadınları oldu. Sex and the City’nin bittiği sene başlayan Desperate Housewives’ın dört komşu kadınının birbirlerine karşı samimiyetlerine ilk başlarda şüphe duymuş olsak da, Amerikan banliyö yaşamının ve sabırsız TV izleyicisinin testlerini geçerek, kendi steril sokaklarında bir koza yaratmayı sonunda başardılar.

Yeni sezon geldi, hangi diziye başlayalım?

Amerika’da görücüye çıkan yeni dizilerin kimi televizyon mezarlığına yolculuklarına, kimi de sonraki sezonları garantileyen sadık izleyicilere sahip olmaya başladı bile. Uzaylılardan süper aileye, mafyanın doğuşundan en karizmatik kanser hastasına, televizyon hayatlarına sıkı başlayan Amerikan dizilerine bakalım

Lost’un yerine koyabileceğimiz bir dizi gelecek mi? Modern Family gibi anında içine çekildiğimiz yeni bir komedi var mı bu sezon? Martin Scorsese’nin dizisi geliyormuş, doğru mu? Amerika’da yeni televizyon sezonu demek, çiçeği burnunda dizilerin aylar öncesinden kendilerini tanıtmaya başlamaları, izleyicinin çoktan listesini hazırlamış olması demek. Burada ise durum biraz daha farklı. Yeni dizileri el yordamıyla keşfetmemiz gerekiyor. Bu sezon Amerika’da başlayan, kimi birkaç bölüm oynamış, kimi sezon sonuna yaklaşan, izleyiciyi giderek içine çeken beş diziye göz atalım.

Boardwalk Empire

Televizyonun sinemanın tahtına oynadığı yeni yüzyılda, büyük oyunculardan sonra büyük yönetmenler de hünerlerini beyazperdeden HD ekranlara taşımaya başladılar. Organize suç ve mafya dünyasından inanılmaz öyküler çıkaran Martin Scorsese, Boardwalk Empire’da yapımcılıktan ilk bölümün yönetmenliğine, oyuncu seçiminden kurgusuna, dizinin arkasındaki isim olarak karşımıza çıkıyor. Tarih: Amerika’da İçki Yasağı Dönemi’nin başladığı 1920. Yer: Kumarhaneleri, yeraltında filizlenen içki ticareti ve meşhur tahta kaldırımlarıyla (boardwalk) ünlü Atlantic City. Steve Buscemi, 30 yıl bu şehri kontrol altında tutmuş, yolsuzluğun tarihini yazmış politikacı Nucky Johnson’ı (dizide Nucky Thompson olarak geçiyor) canlandırıyor. Bizler de mafyanın bu karanlıktan nasıl doğduğuna tanık oluyoruz.

Nesi iyi? Mafya, Martin Scorsese ve The Sopranos’un beyinlerinden Terence Winter bir arada. Başka söze gerek yok herhalde.

Nesi kötü? İlk bölümde dizinin temposu ve karakterler tam oturmuyor. Çok boyutlu karakterleri ve diziyi sürükleyecek öyküyü görmek için 3. bölümü beklemek gerekiyor.

Dizide şimdiki zaman ve geri dönüşlerle anlatılan üç ayrı öykü, giderek büyüyen bir gizemin parçalarını oluşturuyor. Sean (Jason Ritter) kaçırılan kız arkadaşını arıyor. Amerikan Başkanı (Blair Underwood), derin devletin bu dünyadan olmayan bir grup insanı 60 yıldır hapis tuttuklarını öğreniyor. Ve de, insana benzeyen bu uzaylıların kendi içlerinde karmaşık güç dinamikleri olduğunu öğreniyoruz.

Raising Hope

Bir süredir animasyonlara ve karanlık dizilere hapsolmuş arızalı çekirdek aile yeni sezonun en iyi komedi dizisiyle ekranlarımıza dönüş yapıyor. Dizinin adındaki Hope bir bebeğin adı. Hayatta hiç bir amacı olmayan 23 yaşındaki Jimmy, bir sabah baba olduğunu öğreniyor. Bebek bir şekilde Jimmy ve ailesiyle yaşamak zorunda kalıyor. Raising Hope, Amerikalıların ‘beyaz çöp’ adını uygun gördükleri alt sınıfın altı Chance ailesinin kendilerini bile idare edemezken, nasıl bir bebekle başa çıktıklarını anlatıyor. Sigarasından taviz vermeyen anne (Martha Plimpton), hiç bir işe yaramayan baba (Garret Dillahunt) ve bunak anneanne (Cloris Leachman), evlerinde bir bebeğin sağ kalmasını olabildiğince zorlaştırıyorlar. Mahpeyker: Turkish biopic brings nothing new to Ottoman queen mother

Billed as a fresh take on one of the most famous and powerful women in Ottoman imperial history, ‘Mahpeyker’ hopes to provide a multidimensional portrait of Kösem Sultan, but in the end it simply reinforces her image as the power-crazy queen mother. Sadly, Tarkan Özel’s film fails to depict how a naïve young girl became the empire’s leading power

Director Tarkan Özel’s debut feature, Mahpeyker, is an ambitious biopic of Kösem Sultan, the woman who left her mark on the Ottoman Empire for half-a-century and was a true force of nature in the first half of the 17th century.

Sadly, by the time Selda Alkor, the actress playing Kösem Sultan, utters in her regal voice the strongwoman’s immortal words, “I have chosen to let my poison out into the palace, and give my milk to my people,” you have already lost interest in the story.

Mahpeyker means “moon-shaped” – it was the name given to her at age 15 when she was captured and brought to Istanbul, to the harem of Sultan Ahmed I. Four centuries ago, comparing someone’s face to the full moon was not an implication that one was calling her chubby but a compliment emphasizing her beauty. The more popular, well-known name Kösem was given to her later by Ahmed.

As the older Kösem Sultan reminisces about her first days in the palace, how she was manipulated and shoved around by the older women in power, the story alternates to the later years of her reign and power.

Sultan Ahmed falls for the young concubine Mahpeyker, leading him to marry this moon-faced beauty. For reasons unclear in the movie, Sultan’s mother and grandmother do not think of Mahpeyker as a suitable candidate for Ahmed’s consort. They send her off for an education that never seems to end. And when Ahmed later finds out about the schemes of his mother and grandmother to distance his favorite concubine from him, he takes charge and reunites with Mahpeyker, leading toward her transformation into Kösem. The story of Ahmed and Kösem eventually goes down in history as one of the greatest imperial love stories of the Ottoman palace.

From concubine to queen mother

When Ahmed dies at 28, Kösem’s education pays off, helping her to become an influential and undefeatable force in the palace. She pulls the strings in the Ottoman reign, first through her sons Murad IV and İbrahim (the Mad) I, and later through her grandson Mehmed IV, all who reigned as Ottoman sultans. She becomes the much-feared Valide Sultan (queen mother) for nearly three decades.

Women had enormous power in the imperial palace during the Ottoman Empire. But it was Kösem Sultan who formally became the first regent. It is fair to say that she practically ran the empire during the reign of Murad IV, continuing to attend the divan (Cabinet) meetings behind a curtain long after her position as a regent was over. Later, İbrahim’s mental instability – hence the title “Mad” – helped Kösem Sultan to cement her strong role in the palace. Her second formal regency came after Ibrahim, when her seven-year-old grandson Mehmed IV became the Sultan. This lasted for just three years; Kösem Sultan’s end came yet from another powerful woman in the palace, Mehmed’s mother, Turhan Hatice.

In the film, Kösem Sultan is played by two actresses. Damla Özcan plays her in her younger years when she was just a novice concubine in the harem while the ever-regal Alkor plays her in her older years. Özcan’s portrayal of a young and confused Mahpeyker is in stark contrast to the power-crazy Kösem of decades later.

Film fails to provide a fresh take

While showing a young and vulnerable Kösem is a fresh take on a figure remembered in history and pop culture only through her hard-shelled persona of later years, it still fails to show how such a fresh-faced girl transformed into such a grand regal presence.

There are also some crucial details overlooked or misrepresented in the movie. It is never mentioned, for instance, that Kösem was of Greek origin and that she was the daughter of a priest. And her death becomes a true product of fiction, distorting the official historical records.

Mahpeyker hopes to give a multi-dimensional, never-before-seen portrayal of a figure often misrepresented. But sadly, it turns into a film showing a naïve young girl turning into a monster of a woman fond of power games.

Not many people know that Kösem Sultan was also renowned for her close involvement in charity work, that she freed her slaves after three years of service and that when she died she was mourned for three days in Istanbul.

There is hardly any hint of that persona in the movie and it just goes further to reinforce the devious queen mother image.

Eclipse: Tutuk vampirler destanı

Televizyonu mezarlığa dönüştüren onlarca vampirin arasında, çağımızın en sıkıcı vamprileri bir kez daha beyazperdeden genç kızlar ve annelerine göz kırpıyorlar. ‘Twilight’ serisinin ikinci film ‘New Moon’la hemen hemen aynı öyküye sahip ‘Eclipse’de karakterler büyüyor ama malesef daha sığ ve daha sıkıcı karakterlere dönüşüyorlar

Kafası karışık ergen kızlar, ergen kızların anneleri, ergen kız annesi olacak yaşı çoktan geçmiş bekar kadınlar, romantik aşkın kaybolmasına iç geçirenler, cinsiyet rollerinin karmaşıklığına kafa yoranlar, doğaüstünün iyi bir metafor olduğuna yürekten inananlar. Birazcık sinemaya giden, televizyon dizilerini takip eden, popüler kültürle haşı neşir herkese, her keseye uygun bir vampir bulmak mümkün bu aralar.

Günbatımına yeni uyanmış, biraz kanlı biraz çapaklı gözleriyle, kendilerine hayran ölümlülere iştahla bakan vampirleri bir süredir her dört televizyon dizisinden birisinde görmek mümkün. True Blood’ın şehvetli, The Vampire Diaries’in ergenlerin arasına kamufle olmaya çalışan ve de yeni dizi The Gates’in ev kadını vampirlerinin arasından bu hafta sıyrılan tanıdık başka bir vampir var karşımızda: Edward Cullen.

Gökyüzünün farklı hallerinden her sene biraz daha fazla para pompalayan Twilight serisinin, ikinci filmi New Moon'dan sonra Eclipse de bu hafta sinemalarda. Yaşıtları arasında kendine yer bulamayan, kafası karışık bir genç kızın, Atatürk Samsun’a çıkmaya hazırlanırken vampire dönüştürülen genç görünümlü bilge bir adama tutulmasından çok ay tutulmasından ismini alan üçüncü filmin, bir önceki filmden farkını anlamak pek kolay değil aslında.

Hadi erkekler sinemaya

New Moon’da, esas kız Bella (Kristen Stewart) bir yandan sırılsıklam aşık olduğu, tepkisiz vampir Edward’la (Robert Pattinson) ilişkisini raya oturtmaya çalışırken, bir yandan da küçüklük arkadaşı, kurtadam Jacob’ın (Taylor Lautner) gelişen göğüs kaslarına bakmadan edemiyordu. Filmde, bir an önce vampir olmak isteyen Bella’nın bu talebi, sevgilisi Edward tarafından sürekli reddedilirken, kötü vampirler de Bella’ya diş biliyorlardı.

Eclipse’de ise konu olarak değişen çok az şey var. Yalnızca gençlerimiz biraz daha büyümüş oldukları için (Edward, 105 yaşını tamamlıyor) hormonlar farklı çalışmaya başlıyor. Bella bir an önce sevgilisiyle seks yapmak istiyor, Jacob kurtoğlandan kurtadama geçmenin verdiği özgüvenle taleplerini daha net bir şekilde ifade ediyor, Edward ise ağlak gözleriyle tüm bu durumu bir kez daha uzaktan izlemeyi tercih ediyor.

Hali hazırda banko bir izleyici kitlesi olan Twilight serisi, üçüncü filmle yepyeni bir pazarı da girdabına çekmeye çalışıyor: Erkekler. Filmde, tutuk aşk üçgeni kadar filmin son bölümüne hakim olan büyük savaşın, savaşa hazırlığın da büyük önemi var. Giderek daha ustalaşan aksiyon sahneleriyle Eclipse, ergen kızların erkek arkadaşlarının da utanmadan sinema salonlarına girebilmelerini hedefliyor. Neredeyse her iğreti aşk sahnesini, kanlı bir çatışma sahnesi takip ediyor. Oyuncular Pattinson ve Lautner’ın röportajlarında tekrarladıkları, filmin daha tehlikeli, daha aksiyona yönelik olduğu beyanatları da, büyük bir olasılıkla bu pazarlama stratejisinin bir parçası oluyor.

Eclipse, Bella ve sınıf arkadaşlarının mezuniyet gerginlikleriyle başlıyor. Kısa bir süre sonra, mezuniyetin bir dolu şeyin acemi metaforu olduğunu görüyoruz. Bella vampir olmak için giderek daha fazla direnirken, bakire bir insan olarak ölmek istemediğini de gayet net bir şekilde Edward’a söylüyor. Edward ise, ‘eski kafalı’ bir vampir olarak, ‘evlenmeden olmaz’ diyor. Bu bakış açısını ne Bella, ne de izleyici anlıyor, gene de genç kızların sinema salonunda iç geçirmelerine engel olamıyor.

Bella, ‘Gossip Girl’e transfer oluyor

Daha önceki filmlerde Bella’nın vampir olma talebi ve Edward’ın bunu reddetmesi bekaret, seksten uzak durma gibi muhafazakar cinsel yaptırımlara (ya da ‘yaptırmamlara’) gönderme olarak karşımıza çıkarken, Eclipse’de romanların yazarı Stephenie Meyer ve senarist Melissa Rosenberg alenen taleplerinin bu yönde olduklarını söylüyorlar.

İlk iki filmde daha cesur, daha sıradışı ve kadın kimliğini ezdirmemeye niyetli Bella, bu filmde tamamen farklı bir role bürünüyor. Bir yandan iki erkeğe aynı anda göz kırparken, bir yandan da iki erkeğin birbirlerine düşmesine ortam hazırlayıp, aradan çekilerek, pasif bir karaktere dönüşüyor. ‘Cool’ Bella, ‘Tutulma’da alışık olduğumuz manipülatif bir ergen kıza dönüşüyor.

Eclipse’in tutuk bir başka yanı da, Edward, Rosalie ve Jasper gibi vampirlerin sürekli Bella’ya vampir olmanın ne kadar kötü olduğuna ikna etmeye çalışmaları. Filmlerin sıkıcı insanları ve ilkel şartlarda yaşayan kurtadamlarıyla karşılaştırıldığında, mutlu ve refah içinde yaşayan vampirlerin bu kadar kurban edebiyatı yapmaların tek bir nedeni olabileceği geliyor aklımıza. Cullen vampirlerinin dertlerinin vampirlikle değil de, bilmiş bir ergeni aralarına katmanın tedirginliğiyle ilgili olduğu.

Zayıf karakterleri, kör göze parmak metaforları, sıkıcı öyküleriyle Twilight kitapları çarpık ruhlarını filmlere de yansıtıyor. Seksi vampirler, yetişkin insan-vampir ilişkileri, inceden inceye içinizi saran varoluş bunalımları, sızlanmaktan çok eğlenmeyi tercih eden karakterler ilginiz çekiyorsa, 3. sezonuna yeni başlayan True Blood dizisine bir göz gezdirin. Sookie’nin Bella’yı, Eric’in Edward’ı iç çamaşırında çalkalayacağını görmek, içinizi rahatlatabilir.

One Shot! Futbolda habercilikten ötesi

Belçika’da 11 Temmuz’a kadar futbol hayranlarıyla buluşacak One Shot! sergisi, futbolun günümüzle karmaşık ilişkisine 50’den fazla eserle bakıyor. Serginin iki önemli eseri George Best ve Zinedine Zidane’ın video portreleri

Futbolun çağımızla karmaşık ilişkisine dışarıdan bakabilmenin öyle kolay bir şey olmadığını kabul etmek gerekiyor. Sinemaya ya da güzel sanatlara ayrılan sayfaların üç-beş katıyla gazeteleri işgal eden futbol haber ve yorumlarından biraz uzaklaşarak, futbolun toplumsal olarak neyin habercisi olduğunu anlayabilmek için hem futbolu sevmek, hem anlamak, hem de fanatizmin göz karartan şiddetli tukusundan bazen kopabilmek gerekiyor.

Belçika’nın Charleroi şehrinde 11 Temmuz’a kadar futbol hayranlarıyla buluşacak inanılmaz kapsamlı futbol sergisi One Shot!, futbolda habercilikten çok daha fazlası olduğunu, dünyanın en popüler sporunun günümüzde hangi alanlarda kendini gösterdiğini ve sanatçının futbolla heyecanlı ilişkisini merkezine alıyor.

Sergi ilham kaynağını, eski amatör futbolcu Macar yazar Péter Esterházy’nin futbola kişisel ve felsefi yaklaşımlarını derlediği, Journey to the Depths of the Sixteen-Metre Line kitabından alıyor. Esterházy, kitabında 1950’lerin efsanevi futbolcusu Ferenc Puskás’ın modern dünya için ideal bir metafor olduğunu düşündüğünü yazıyor: “Puskás futbolun son tanınmış ismi, son yakından tanıdığımız karakteri, modernitenin son ışığı. O hakiki metafora uzanan bir yolculuk. Ondan sonra tek yıldız diye bir şey olmadı. Artık varoluş durumuna uyacak cevaplar yok. Cruyff, Pelé, Maradona gibi, cevapların kaliteli kopyaları, örnekleri var.” Esterházy, bu iddialı sözlerini şu şekilde bağlıyor: “Puskás’la oyun biter ve eğlence çağı başlar.”
